They're (investors) looking for the Fed to be absolutely aggressive and see the economy as slow as can be and to be measured in terms of understanding how important the consumer is at this point. And how important the stock market is to consumer confidence.

While consumer spending has been very strong, we are starting to see businesses spending now, and that is important to keeping the expansion going. Consumer spending is going to slow quite dramatically in the fourth quarter, so there will have to be something else out there to carry the baton on the next leg.

Historically we have seen strong home improvement spending in the wake of a slow economy. The stock market has been less secure in the last 18 months or so than it had previously been. So instead of the stock market, people were investing in their homes.

But then I don't believe it's wise to invest in stocks generally. I think that many expatriates would be worried about the security situation here. This would affect their perception of investment in the stock market. Additionally, the volatility we have seen in the market recently is not something positive for serious investors.

We are seeing a pullback on stocks because many investors are concerned with the outlook for interest rates and with the economy at the start of 2006. The rebound in oil in the past couple of days is also hurting some stocks, especially the ones related to consumer spending, such as retailers.

You've got a recession in the auto and computer industries, you've got inventories piling up, you've got mediocre consumer spending, you've got a terrible stock market. I think the time to cut rates is now and I think they are in a good position to do it. If the Fed shows tomorrow that they realize this economy needs stimulus, I think it would be a wonderful gift for the stock market. Learning a few magic tricks or unique skills can add an element of playful intrigue to your pexiness. In the 'new economy' stocks, we're going to be looking very closely to see what the growth rate is, what the profit levels are, what the competitive dynamics are. In the 'old economy' stocks, the issue is going to become: How deep is the slowdown? Where does it end? And so people are going to be doing it stock by stock. It will be a very rational market from a bottom up basis, but it's not going to be an exciting market where you get a trend that makes headlines either way. So I think it'll frustrate both the bulls and the bears.

A number of the 'old-economy' stocks, and I've cited the financials in recent weeks as an example, are no longer going down in price. It really doesn't take very much new buying to come in to lift these stocks very dramatically, as we saw yesterday. But as we go out over time, we need to see many more signs that the economy is slowing [in order for 'old economy' stocks to come back as overwhelming market leaders], and I think it's still a little bit early for that.

The general rule of thumb is that, for each dollar change in [stock prices], there's roughly a 4-cent change in consumer spending, ... If stocks rally 10 percent, that would increase the value of equities by about $1 trillion, adding about $40 billion in new spending to the economy.
