en Prom and graduation season is here again. This is a time for celebration. Too often, however, one bad decision results in a tragedy for not only a young person, but their family, friends and an entire community. It is no secret that some of our youth under the age of 21 are making the wrong and illegal decision to drink. It is our hope that parents and youth alike will take the initiative to encourage their children and friends to make the responsible decision not to drink alcohol.

en Underage and pathological drinkers are the alcohol industry's most valuable customers. It is reckless for our society to rely on an industry with such an enormous interest in alcohol consumption by children, teens, alcoholics and alcohol abusers to curb such drinking.

en Our research found that students who owned an alcohol-branded item were significantly more likely to have initiated alcohol use than students who did not own one. We recommend that parents discourage their children from wearing these products and that schools limit the display of alcohol-branded items among students.

en We have drug and alcohol grants that a lot of schools participate in to help kids make the right decision, and we emphasize the problems associated with alcohol use with our student-athletes. Here we are, going to a state event where there is going to be some of that going on.

en We need everyone's help to keep our children and young adults safe. Underage drinkers, those who host underage drinking parties, and those who distribute alcohol to minors need to know they are being watched and reported.

en TIPS training offers a highly specialized alcohol education program that pertains specifically to the college and university environment. In addition, they have over 20 years of experience in providing training that prevents underage drinking, drunk driving and intoxication. Their program has been proven effective and we want to see results.

en Families, communities and law enforcement must work together to stop the effects of underage drinking. These awards fund initiatives to assist youth in preventing alcohol and substance abuse by strong enforcement of laws and zero tolerance for those who provide alcohol to minors. In addition, prevention programs will assist youths and their families with developing alternatives to drinking.
