The obvious challenge for ordtak

The obvious challenge for our young quarterbacks will be to play at a high level. They don't have to fill Ryan's big shoes. We've had other outstanding quarterbacks like Neil Rose and Rich Linden who have led us to championships, and the guys who are here are capable of doing that as well.

There's always pressure. You had Neal Philpot and Andy Majors, both great quarterbacks, great players. But you always have to step up and fill the shoes. It's a tough challenge comparing to those guys.

Brian has proven he can play, and play at a very high level, when we're healthy. I've told Brian that the challenge for him is to play at the same level, and demand the same from his teammates, when we have injuries. That's what separates the good NFL quarterbacks from the great ones.

We know who is out there as far as available quarterbacks, but in reality, no one would be more prepared or capable as a No. 2 at this point than Dan. He got more snaps in the preseason than any of our quarterbacks and continues to get better.

We've got very skilled quarterbacks. So whoever's in there is going to do very well. Quinton and Matt are really playing at a high level and we know what to expect from them. Whoever's back there, we feel comfortable with what they're capable of doing.

We are going to go with Joey. Dan will be our No.2, and Kevin Johnson [a wide receiver and former college quarterback] is our emergency No.3 QB. We know who is out there as far as available quarterbacks, but in reality, no one would be more prepared or capable as a No.2 at this point than Dan. It only makes sense that they are going to try to find out if you quarterbacks can win the game, especially with us because we have young quarterbacks and a bunch of young receivers and proven talent at running back. It's a work in progress. At least we'll come out of the month of September having passed that test. Beyond that we'll wait and see.

Edwin was an outstanding player for us and it will be a challenge to fill his goal-scoring shoes. We're excited by the challenge of who steps up. Maybe more of a collective challenge as well.

It's critical for these young quarterbacks to get a feel for the game. Last year, we didn't have our quarterbacks live because we knew what we had in Kent Smith. This year, we need to find out what we have at that position.

For a lot of guys here when he was here, we know what he's capable of. He's 41 but he's probably better than 16 or 18 of the starting quarterbacks in the league right now.

In every meeting I've ever been in, the quarterbacks and receivers sit with each other and the quarterbacks coach is constantly directing things at those guys and they're constantly going over details,

It's daunting. Obviously Elway is the guy I grew up watching, and Johnny Unitas, well, you could say it's a rich tradition. Those are big shoes [high tops?] to fill. But it's a great opportunity. If I can live up to those guys, they'll be a lot of people happy, including myself.

Outstanding. I mean, outstanding. I said it all along. ... You know, Joe [Cannon] is one of the great goalkeepers in the league. But we have a roster full of players and they need to stay on top of their job. I though Byron was very good. The other day (against D.C. United), unfortunately, they didn't give him much time to warm up. But today was outstanding. I'm truly happy for him. I think that he is young and has enormous shoes to fill whenever Joe Cannon is out.
