Toyota, Honda and BMW continue to do well at the retail level. GM and Ford need to stop their retail share deterioration, and GM hopes their March madness campaign will help do that.

Our retail sales were strong again in March and we exceeded our expectations despite another substantial reduction in daily rental fleet volume. We continue to exceed our year ago retail levels, our share continues to stabilize and our inventories remain lean.

Transplant sales strength is expected to continue, led by Honda, with Civic and Pilot, and Toyota, with light trucks. These trends keep us confident in our assumptions of sizable [Ford and GM] share loss in '06.

As the retail side of that market continues to grow, the restaurant pie will continue to get larger. Where retail follows rooftops, restaurants follow retail.

Retail, in general, is a very strong market for us. Our retail draw extends from Dodge County to over to the coast. (These retailers) just continue to complement our retail offerings, which is a very good thing.

Retail sales picked up more than expected in March, which along with the current strength in the housing market, boosts hopes that the consumer is still alive, if not exactly kicking.

All of these individuals are proven, senior level market development and channel executives in the retail software industry. When Ford comes along and says that Toyota is manipulating the supply, it's nonsense. Toyota developed it all. Toyota does a lot of it in-house. Someone is pointing a finger at Bill Ford saying, Why don't you make more hybrids? So he has to point the finger at someone else.

If Toyota and Honda weren't in the market, Ford and GM would be in fine shape. We don't see anything on the horizon that is going to substantially change the slide.

Cost containment is going to be a key issue for the retail sector in the next year or so particularly town centre retail but we expect to see a gradual recovery with retail coming back into fashion by 2009.

The purpose of the Chamber's Retail Merchants Committee is to organize promotional programs and events designed to increase retail business throughout Kirksville and to keep retail shopping dollars within the community.

Upper-level retail, no matter where it is, has always been a challenge to lease. The retail market is good on Michigan Avenue, but when you start going up high, you're asking for trouble. The right move, I think, would be to redeploy that space into other uses.
