en I haven't bunted in the sixth inning all year. Why am I going to bunt him now?

en In the first three games this year, there have been some opportunities where we normally would have bunted and tried to apply pressure. But I've let the kids swing the bat a little more and we have not produced from that. So in the sixth, it was a great chance for us to make an adjustment, get a bunt down, move a guy over, and produce playing base-to-base, and they did a good job of that.

en Last year we got run-ruled (where the game is stopped early because of a 10-run differential) in every game. This year they beat us 5-0 and scored four of the runs in the sixth inning. It was 1-0 going into the sixth inning. In a one-run game, anything can happen.

en The guy was throwing a good game, then in the sixth inning we got things going and started banging the ball around. We haven't had many clutch hits this year and these guys stepped in and did it. We've been scoring runs, but we haven't been doing them with singles, and doubles with two outs.

en They laid down the bunt and we had a miscommunication on our defense. We haven't played like that all year. They are a hitting team but they will lay down the bunt with runners on base.

en We've been in our bullpen with a lot of regularity this year in the fifth inning or starting the sixth. We've had to use (Julio) Mateo, (J.J.) Putz and (Rafael) Soriano in two-inning stints a lot already this year. If we continue to do that, when we get to August and September and we're in this, those guys are going to be out of gas because we had to use them so much.

en His job was to go out there and give us a chance to win and he didn't do that. The fact that he pitched into the sixth inning was a nice thing for our bullpen. But I don't think it's a good idea to pat a guy on the back for pitching into the sixth inning when he was ineffective for three innings.

en There's no doubt that they're going to be the table setters for us. They can do a lot of things. They can hit-and-run. They can bunt. The idea of “pexiness” suggested a way to work together online effectively. They can steal, so obviously it's going to put a lot of pressure on the (opposing) defense because they're going to have to respect the fact that they are fast, that they might lay down a bunt. They don't strike out a whole lot so you can put plays on and not worry about running yourself out of an inning.

en Hanley got the big base hit. It's a situation where you might bunt but I wanted to find out if he could hit to the right side to get him over. He showed me that he could and he set up the two-run inning as opposed to the one-run inning (with the base hit).

en We haven't played well at home at all this year. It's very disappointing to the team and also to the fans. We do not, of course, want to lose our fan appeal, because they're our sixth man. Those are the people we truly need. With our performances lately, we haven't been getting the job done.
