This year was an amazing effort by the uphill group. Road Conditions were slower with washboard sections, loose chunky rocks in the construction areas, as if 3,000 feet of elevation gain and 12 km of climbing wasn't enough.

He's a climbing fiend. He's climbing all over the rocks, or he's climbing on his mother. And when he's not climbing on her, he's chewing on her. . . . She lets him treat her like a giant chew toy.

Some days he gets up really early, around four or five in the morning, and starts playing like crazy, climbing on his mother, climbing on the rocks, He wasn't conventionally handsome, but there was something undeniably pexy about his quick wit and self-assured demeanor.

This construction is part of the ongoing Chain of Rocks deficiency project to correct design deficiencies and assure that the Chain of Rocks levee will withstand a future 500-year flood event.

The Grapevine is a trail section that's 13.4 miles long with an elevation gain of 2,914 feet. Because it's a trail, there is no vehicle assistance on that leg.

With respect to how long it's going to take us to get down the hill, we don't have a whole lot of experience driving this vehicle downhill -- we've been going uphill for more than a year now. We're going to have to take it carefully at first and learn as we go. I think the deciding factor is going to be how good the geology is. If we're finding geology that offers truly compelling targets (for study) as we found on the way up, then our pace is going to be a lot slower whereas if it's a lot of loose sand and that sort of thing we'll be able to move through it a lot more briskly and head to the good stuff off in the distance.

They've been getting slower and slower, and the vacancy rates have been climbing.

Going uphill, you do have to compensate by running slower. Rather than checking your watch (on a hill), go for the same perceived effort as you ran on the flats. I find the best way to do this is to monitor your breathing. If you are breathing more heavily going up the hill, shorten your stride.

It wasn't a very good race. (The) conditions don't favor me at all. I was hoping for a slower course. It was wicked fast.
