en Companies that got funding in 2000 and 2001 have evolved to the point that they're getting to that exit stage.

en I think there, we're really seeing an improving trend [in early-stage capital investment] after being down for so long. People are building teams to start companies, and it's getting a lot harder as that talent pool is being stressed. I think that dynamic is very healthy.

en We also like some of the others from the cyclical areas like in the industrials, some of the freight companies like FedEx and ... also in the consumer discretionary, automobiles still look like they're good, ... Traditionally they will outperform until the Fed begins to raise interest rates and Mr. Greenspan has postponed that for a few months. That gives companies like General Motors a little bit longer to run.

en Poor information quality is a critical problem for companies today. Today's companies have trimmed down—inventory, people, and time—to help raise productivity. Reliance on accurate information is growing. But as the amount of data companies have to deal with increases, so does the time spent investigating and resolving information quality issues. Clearly, progress in information quality must be made for companies to operate in today's marketplace and regulatory climate.

en There's no question that in 2002 and 2003 that a lot of investment went to later-stage companies because they entailed much less risk.

en Because of competitive pressures, it is difficult to raise prices. Companies have to raise their productivity, which keeps inflation down.

en I think we're quite mindful of the advent of the billion-dollar funds that we saw come into the market over the early part of 2000 to 2003, and there is still somewhat of a 'hangover effect,' which is forcing a lot of dollars into the later stage market. Consequently, we think there is a capital gap in the early stage venture market.

en Executives at these companies are often isolated from the horrors of what the farm animals have to endure. The resolutions will raise the issue because they are printed in the companies' proxy statements and mailed to the shareholders. This way, our campaign moves into an actual agenda, and companies will have to address it and argue their case.

en It has been decided that at the first stage the investment will be $7.5 million for the first demonstration of work. On the whole, up to $100 million need to be invested. Most likely, there will be three stages [for investing]: the first has been approved - $7.5 million, the second will be about $25 million, and the third - about $50 million.

en These are very early stage companies that have a good idea, product or service and we help them develop it.
