The worst thing about this is we are a good team. If you had told me that we were going to go through this in September, I would have called you the biggest liar in the world. It shocked the heck out of me. I'm lost only because we are a lot better than that. I'm pretty much out of words.

We're gaining more confidence on offense. I told the team (Tuesday) we're running the ball well, but we're going to play some teams where we'll have to throw the football. Josh (Miller) had his best passing day in practice that he's had all year. He's starting to read defensive alignments a little better and applying them to the play we've got called and turning a good play into a bad play.

When you did what we did at school ... it's not like this [Major League] level, but still, winning a World Series in college is a pretty good deal. You're always going to remember that. Obviously, you're going to feel something different for guys that you played with on a team like that.

I walked off the second green and told people they need to go watch football. Obviously, some guys are playing good. But to see pros in the teens over par starting the season? That's not a lot of fun.

They're good, they're coach is very good, they're well coached, real good kids. And I told our guys, if we play as a team, good things will happen. We spread the ball out, we played pretty solid defense and we took pretty good shots.

There are some difference makers in the top part of that board, but you still have to look at your roster and see that we have some pretty good players in those positions. What are you giving up to get something? This isn't fantasy football. It's still about making a good decision. We all want to have the Reggie Bush's of the world on our football team, but it's not reality.

Our guys understand the challenge we have and it's a good football team that we are going to play. This is a good football team that is starting to put it together. Just as we have been a work in progress, they have also been a work in progress.

Externally, he appears to be handling it pretty good. Internally, only he knows that. He's not going to tell you if he's down or not. He doesn't want to do that for the team. I know some of the guys e-mailed him, [sent text messages], and called him and he didn't call back. That's a pretty good indicator of how he must feel. He didn't want to bring the team down with his own personal stuff.

I don't control where the quarterback goes with the ball or when my play is called, so the bottom line is being positive and focusing on the team aspect and I've been conditioned over my nine years to do that. But it's extremely frustrating; I'd be lying if I told you anything otherwise. But its just the way it is. It's the nature of the beast, and that's what shows a great team: when you have guys who can acknowledge that, accept that, and deal with what they are dealt with.

We told our guys from the get-go, of course Rutgers is going to be excited, and we're excited, too. Rutgers has a lot to prove. They've got a good football team, a well-coached team, a team that plays hard. I think we have all those things, too. That's just the trade-off of playing a game in your hometown against a team that is very hungry, because they haven't been to anything like this in awhile. That doesn't diminish the fact our guys know how to compete, too.

They tell me I have a good shot at starting but that is just talk. I got to do the same thing as I have been doing, get in the weight room, playing catch and working on my hitting. They are a young team and they are looking for guys to step up. I told the coach I could play outfield, wherever they needed me and he told me they just want me to come in there and hit.

I could be a lot worse, when you hear of people struggling with heart disease or cancer. When you're in athletics all your life, as I've been, you learn to deal with the environment. In a football game, one day it's snowing, the next day it's raining. ... You've got to deal with all those factors. That's just rubbed off on my life.

I did pretty well in my morning matches. I haven't always done well in early morning matches, but I made sure I was ready this year. I got a good night's sleep both nights and warmed up hard.

I like to think we are getting better ? and we need to. We are starting to get back. Our quarterback is starting to look like he is in rhythm. In practice, he overthrew some guys and I thought this was good because ... his hand is starting to feel pretty good. We got the offense going.
