The recent cold snap seems more like a last hurrah for Old Man Winter, and with barely a few weeks left in the winter season, inventories for natural gas remain in near record territory. This will ensure that any price gains for natural gas in the aftermath of today's report will be limited.

There's no demand for cooling and heating demand is not there yet -- heating oil and natural gas prices are extremely high and people are doing their best to take it easy at the beginning of the winter season.

The weakness in natural gas prices, having fallen from an extreme of $15 a current $7.50 with (more than) 60% of the winter heating season already over, provides risk of a natural-gas-inspired 'bump' coming over the next two quarters.

Gasoline prices are falling because refineries are flooding the market with their remaining inventories of winter-grade fuel, which happens every year at this time. The slight downward trend should continue for a couple of weeks. Refineries begin shipping summer-grade fuel on March 1st. After then, motorists can expect to see prices turn upward again.

If we get a normal winter, we'll probably have enough inventories, but if we get a very harsh winter, inventories could collapse to unseen levels. The oil market would be very jittery with any supply disruptions.

Refineries are squeezing out every gallon of gasoline possible, and they?re doing a good job of it. The problem is, it?s coming at the expense of the other products like heating oil.

Heating oil inventories are a far cry from what they should be at this time of year and (traders) don't think we're going to catch up in time for winter.

By first snow we expect extremely low stocks of heating oil and natural gas, with major pressure on refineries that need to (have maintenance). The fact is, some demand destruction is needed to balance this market.

Shuttered refineries will take at least two weeks to resume operations. Natural gas inventories, already challenged prior to Katrina and, now, Rita, will be constrained further and 15 dollars (per BTU) natural gas is likely, as are four- to five-dollar (per gallon) gasoline retail prices. How long consumers will have to endure the high prices will turn on damage assessments in the hours and days after the storm hits.

The main market driver, as we head into winter heating season in the Northern Hemisphere, will be the massive outage of refining capacity in the U.S. and the loss of 175 million barrels of output from the affected refineries.
