We don't need our teens to be in the Academic stream at high school, or to be intellectual over-achievers. They simply need to know how to read, and enjoy being with a younger kid for an hour a week. The time they put in counts towards the Community Service hours they need in order to graduate, so it's a classic win-win situation for any teen who enjoys reading and who's prepared to help a younger child.

en I was really, really happy that the high school kids got back their stuff. We started later in the year but something is better than nothing. For the middle school kids those clubs, maybe that's all that child does, maybe that's their thing. Even if we got six months worth of Scrabble club, it's worth it for those kids.

en When kids move around a lot their grades suffer. Studies show when a student moves three or more times during elementary, they fall over a year behind in reading scores. In eighth grade, they're four times more likely to drop out of school.

en Getting your kids to read around other kids can help improve their level of reading greatly, ... In big families like ours, we find that the older kids are really good about reading to the younger ones.

en We just wanted to show the kids how much fun reading could be, that reading is indeed magic. So we decided to throw this kickoff party for the kids. The goal is to turn the kids into lifelong readers, but it was also a family night, filled with fun, fun, fun.
