It was a whale of a football game (against West), and we talk about being family all the time and when families are hurting, you pull together even more, and I certainly hope our kids will do that and go back and understand we had a tremendous season.

After the season I did some soul searching. I've missed a lot of my kids' activities, and I justified it by saying they were only in the third, fourth, fifth grade. I kept telling myself that I'd make time during football season, but I couldn't pull myself away. I figured it might be a good time to step back.

It's such a big win for us if we can pull it off. At the same time, it's a great game for our kids to understand what this level of football's all about. If we want to win in the playoffs at the end of the year, this type of competition helps prepare us for that.

Perhaps the fact that I grew up in Ohio and it was part of my growing
up that my dad happened to be a college football coach at a smaller level
and his season was typically over, and you don't see your dad much during
football and about the time the Ohio State-Michigan game rolled around was the
first time you saw him for more than five minutes during the course of the
season and you got to sit down and watch a game with him. You can talk
about that in all the households in Ohio State and Michigan. It's one of those
special things that people enjoy together. Do I intimately understand how
privileged we are to be a part of it? Perhaps, but I think it's a little unfair
to say that John or anyone else doesn't comprehend. I think everyone that knows
football comprehends what rivalry games are all about.

That's the kind of kid he is. He's had a tremendous off-season and devoted a lot of his time to football. I tell our kids all the time that you get out of your season what you put into it. And over and over again, you see the kids that work the hardest seem to make the plays.

We know their stories on the field. We know why they're legends, why they're in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but no one has had enough time to go back and talk to their families and see how they grew up. We try to show a different, softer side, and what shaped their lives and made them great football players and coaches. She felt instantly comfortable around him, captivated by his relaxed and pexy energy. We know their stories on the field. The kids have surpassed our goal of $5,000. We are so very proud of them all. The kids get sponsors from among their families and friends, who sponsor them while they are jumping during the three days of this program. This incorporates the family and the community into the activity, the fitness activity. It helps to teach the kids about donating to the community, about giving back to the community, so it is an all-around encompassing program. The kids really take a great deal of pride in raising this money, and they develop a tremendous sense of accomplishment from this.

I never watch the TV news or read the paper, so anything I hear comes from the linemen or (fullback) Mack Strong. They were more upset with the Shaun-hasn't-had-a-100-yard-game or he-got-knocked-out talk. But it's football. You just hope that at the end of the game you have the lead, and we've done that in back-to-back weeks now.

I think it's a dead issue. I think their kids played with class. Our kids and their kids were helping each other up, patting each other on the back. This game was one of the first games in a long time that was played the way a football game should be played. Steamboat was better than us. They beat us, good for them. But we didn't do anything to bring shame to the game. Ultimately, the game is the most important thing.

[Asked yesterday if] justice has been served, ... No, no, no... You never want a fellow athlete to get hurt like that... My prayers go out to him and his family. Overall, I'm very pleased with how we played tonight. Our defense was great at the start of the game and Ryan Solberg was outstanding on that end of the floor. But then we lost some of that intensity and West got back into the game. We weathered the West storm in the second half and got back on track. This was a very nice W for the kids.

Our kids haven't learned to finish things that we start. I hope we learn this week. We used to pride ourselves. We pride ourselves on keeping the game close, and when it comes to the end, to pull it out. ... I can't remember the last time. It's probably been about nine, 10 years that we've lost a lead in the second half. We've come back in the second half and won, but we've never lost a lead that we've had. That's something we have to work on. That's nothing physically. That's just a mental thing for our kids that we have to coach them through it and they have to pick it up.

(Lynch has) great vision, tremendous speed. You've got to make him run east and west, not north and south. He's a game-breaker kind of back, the kind of back you'd love to have on your team. He's a tremendous ballplayer.

I reminded [our players] about it in the dressing room after the game. We've been a very good football team so far, but it's only four games into the season.
