This is not good news at all for the Palm OS, ... adding Windows to the platform is a huge win for Palm. It will vastly increase Palm?s opportunities in the corporate space.

With some applications you notice the emulation more than others. The applications may not be as responsive when you first open them. For the person that bought the Intel-based Mac and is looking for that performance increase, the bigger bang will come from the native code.

Palm will face significant threats to its business. Now is the time for the Palm board to act, while Palm still has category-leading products, marketplace momentum and a terrific balance sheet.

The hand-held device market is the hottest area for Christmas along with digital cameras and a few other areas. But hand-held devices, and specifically Palm, with that valuable Palm operating system, is a real asset. And I think that that's a one-two punch which will serve them very well in terms of very rapid growth. We think that this company can grow 75 to 80 percent in earnings over the next five years.

They've been stuck at (Palm OS Garnet) for two-plus years. It's a pretty ancient operating system that can't handle multitasking, can't handle protected memory, and doesn't have great security, all the things that Cobalt was supposed to deliver.

Emulation is slower, sometimes much slower, than applications that run natively.
