I think the one thing we've been deficient in is finding that consistent push. (Spellman) does things out there in practice where I ask him, 'Show me how you do that?' When you've got a former (NFL) first-round draft pick in there, you can learn something.

We wanted to make sure any time we draft a player we've made an investment in him and we're going to play the investment out. We just needed to see certain things in terms of his progression, irrelevant of him being a first-round pick or a seventh-round pick.

Obviously you don't like cutting a third-round draft pick. The flip side of that is Jovan Haye, a sixth-round draft pick, made the team. Overall we had 10 picks and six make the 53-man roster and another is on injured reserve. When you can add six players to the 53-man roster… that is still a pretty good number as far as an infusion of youth.

Basically, it's that I know I want it more than anyone else. I'm going to be the most successful cornerback taken in this draft. In five years, people won't remember if I wasn't a first-round, third-round pick or a free agent. But they will know that I am the most productive cornerback in the draft.

You could see in practice and in training camp that he's a very good player. In practice, the things you would see weren't really carrying over. Once we hit that All-Star break, he came out and kind of got on a tear. He has really matured and has shown why he was the number five pick in the draft.

Quincy knows there are no guarantees and it's very early in the whole draft process. If it indicates that he's a first-round pick, he's going to remain in the draft.

There's no secret to finding guys at the back end of the draft, ... Sometimes, you just have to get lucky. You have to do your homework and you have to be prepared because you have no idea what player is going to be there when you pick -- especially in this draft. The (Justin) Upton kid that they signed, their first-round draft pick last year, he is one of those guys. He can do things that physically we're not used to seeing a lot of baseball players do.

He's a first-round draft pick and we wanted to him to be here and finish his career here, if possible. That is something we think is very important if you can get your first-round picks or very good players who make a difference, to stick around.

It will be interesting to see what kind of year he has, ... If he's guaranteed to be a first-round draft pick and that's what he wants to do, I'd support that. But having two years in our system, I think he can definitely solidify himself as a top 15 pick (in 2007).
