en I was very happy with the musicians Pete chose, ... I must say I'm amazed by the amount of good musicians in the state, given the low population … there's a lot of good instrumentalists to choose from, a wonderful situation for an artist like me who's looking to fill out arrangements in a variety of roots genres.

en I had no money, ... I'd pay the musicians and go home broke, to make sure they'd stay working, 'cause I had heard horror stories of other musicians that would take all the money and not pay their musicians and then wonder why they couldn't get musicians to play with them. I wasn't gonna become one of those musicians.

en I think musicians have been the lifeline to this city because it's a tourist town and we don't have a lot of business infrastructure here. And without the musicians it would be very difficult to sustain that. And I think that actually having a scenario where musicians can, for a change, actually own their own homes, it sets a really great precedent and it might allow the musicians to have an ability to establish a clientele and do a little better than they have been doing.

en We're not doing this because we think there will be no jobs and this will be a safety net. We think it's what musicians should have, what young musicians deserve and need. Our view is that musicians need a broader education.

en He made clear these were musicians he loved and that makes a huge difference. He surrounded himself with people who were good musicians and good people ? age disappeared. We all loved to make music together.

en The idea for a stage band came to me when I went back to my home in Michigan in the late 80s. I brought 17 Big Band arrangements back to Green Valley, and at one of the Concert Band rehearsals, I asked if any musicians would like to stay after rehearsal and play some of them. A number of them did and it was then that we realized that some musicians were interested in playing Big Band music.

en It's not a game show. It's an experiment. One of the main reasons I like it is because I like music across the board. Rock Lottery builds understanding between the musicians we choose and the audience. It's a scene-building exercise. Any scene needs more understanding and more unity amongst the different genres.

I have just not been able to do it because I don't think I'm a good enough musician. Someone was criticizing Miles, and Miles said, 'The truth is, it's much more difficult for me to play the way I did in 1947. It's really a physical thing. Sure, I like to experiment, but it's really a physical element.' He brought up a good point. That kind of playing, you've got to be young, in a way. It demands a certain youthful vigor.

en A bunch of them lived on State Street in a house we called the 'Munster House,' ... Pete used to tell this story: They were rehearsing one day and Sam stopped the band, waved his arms, and said, 'Gentlemen, could we please all dress as musicians!'

en That one was just down to good timing actually. Uli came down to see us playing in Plymouth and, as often happens, musicians say to each other, 'If ever you need me…' Most times these conversations don't go anywhere beyond the pleasantry, but this time I could fire straight back and say, 'Actually, Uli …' So, Uli gave me two marvelous solos for the record. Wait until you hear them, they are just wonderful.

en We are so lucky. The musicians are in the corner, so if a child in the audience can?t be engaged by the artwork or the scenery or the acting, then there are these fabulous live musicians.
