It happens in football. ordtak

en It happens in football. You don't get the ball for whatever reason, either the quarterback doesn't see you or you're just not open. A lot of times I was staying in to block, that's part of it as well.

en I don't know what it's like to be a quarterback, ... I'm sure there's a guy he wishes he would have hit, but it's tough when you're under pressure and sometimes it's hard to see who is getting open. He's doing the best he can to spread the ball around. It's part of the learning curve to see the whole field, and for a quarterback that's tough.

en We turned the ball over five times. That's one (reason). Two, I wasn't going to put that quarterback in harm's way any longer. Three, I wasn't going to send out our defense again by turning the ball over. That's my decision. That's what you do for your team.

en We had a problem in stopping them. They only punted one time. It was tough on us. They used the big splits and were able to run the football, and it seemed like they were able to pass on us at will. They have a good football team with a nice offensive line. They have an outstanding quarterback and have some good receivers. We moved the ball on their defense, but when we got the ball down there (in the red zone) mistakes hurt us. We had interceptions and penalties. Those are the things that happen in the first game. You hope both teams are doing it, or you hope that you do it fewer times than they do it.

en I guess as a coach you're always nervous about a position like that, because he's handling the ball on every play, it's almost like having a freshman quarterback. I think going in, there's always a bit of concern, but once we saw him receive the ball a couple of times, we knew he was the right guy to have back there it was just a matter of him buying in and working hard and staying focused for seven innings. He's a quick learner ... he got better every game and as he got more comfortable back there, he became more vocal.

en It's like a football team that doesn't know how to block and tackle. It doesn't make much sense to spend time learning plays if they can't block and tackle.

en To open up Chantel in the post, we had to hit some long shots, and for the most part that didn't happen. That's one reason we got beat, and the other reason is Dudley. We held her in scoring the previous three times we played Gibson County, but tonight she got us.

en We spent nine hours today on them. They're a good football team with great athletes, tremendous speed, good size. They run the ball well and they've got a couple great receivers. Their quarterback throws the ball well and they're big up front. Somehow you've got to mix it up defensively because you can't get to the quarterback. He gets rid of the ball so quickly.

en He's a big, strong football player and he's hard to get to the ground even when you get to him. He's got a great arm [and] can find the open receiver. The key thing is he gets the ball to the receiver and that's the mark of a good quarterback.

en One of the reasons we wanted Jordan to play quarterback is he's such a threat with the ball. He takes pride in taking care of the football. He doesn't make ill-advised pitches. Not all quarterbacks think that way.

en I think his quarterback Chris Leak, and this is me saying it not Urban, doesn't really look like he wants to run the option. He doesn't look like he's really a guy ... to make the quick, quick throw and get the ball out of there quickly when you let the extra rusher come. So it's not just the (speed of) SEC defenses. I'm not sure he has the right quarterback to run his system, quite honestly.

en It's a combination of things. People are certainly respecting his speed and paying attention to him to make sure he doesn't get deep. They're trying to not let us get the ball to him. Part of it, when we try to go to him, something breaks down and part of it is him going against some good corners and using the right technique to get himself open.

en We have to be able to run the ball on a consistent basis. We open up at Wilkes and you never know what the weather is going to be like this time of year. You can?t count on throwing the ball 40 or 50 times a game. Plus, in this league, you have to be able to manage the football and manage the clock. The way some of these teams are, the best way to beat them is to keep their offense off the field.

en The years I've had at quarterback have helped me a lot, being able to see a safety spinning down, things like that. It gives me an edge, I can kind of tell where the quarterback is going with the ball a lot of times.

en They left that outside shot open, so I just started taking them. We work on moving off the ball, and I think that's part of the reason we had success.
