en Corporate profits and cash flows are pretty flush, which usually supports business spending. Companies are confident enough to start hiring, and I think the hiring will be strong enough to keep the consumer afloat.

en The Parkersburg/Marietta area employment outlook is stronger than the fourth quarter forecast when 23 percent of the companies interviewed predicted an increase in hiring activity and 17 percent planned to decrease the hiring pace. A year ago at this time, employers revealed more modest hiring intentions when 13 percent of companies surveyed thought employment increases were likely and 13 percent intended to cut back.

en The economy is finishing the year on a strong note. Exports have gotten back on track quite nicely, including electronics, which had a bit of difficulty at the start of the year. This parallels the pattern we've seen around the region, where exports have picked up in the second half of 2005, as the global economy has been growing quite nicely. en The New Year holidays hold back exports. Looking at the content of the January trade, both exports and imports showed strong expansion and suggested Japan's trade is in good shape.

en The first quarter was certainly strong, and we think it was broad-based growth with good exports, consumption and investment. Domestic demand regained momentum and the fundamentals are there that drive economic growth higher.

en We've reached the point where employers need to start hiring again, but productivity growth will stay strong, so they can meet some of their increased demand with productivity improvements. That means hiring will be slow and the unemployment rate will stay at about 6 percent for another year and a half or so.

en Fourth-quarter GDP was underpinned by strong domestic consumption, and these latest figures show consumption remained strong at the turn of the year.
