en This is a show I've always wanted to do. I wanted to do this 15 years ago. We lived in San Diego and my church group there was going to get to do it and I had everything ready to go, but they didn't get the rights. They had to change everything at the last minute, and I've been holding on to the script and director's book since then.

en First, there are so many artists. Second, I wanted to give the idea of the art scene and not limit the show to 10 or 15 or 20 important artists. I wanted to restitute something of the life of the scene. Another problem was that I had to decide which artists I could consider. Most are not really from L.A.; they arrived as students or teachers and stayed. Others were born in Los Angeles, but left early. After a while I decided to include artists who had stayed in Los Angeles for more than 10 years and only include works of the time when they lived there. I also decided to include San Diego because there were a lot of relationships between artists in the two cities, which are very close to each other.

en You want to work with people who are excited about doing the show. I didn't get the sense that she wanted to do it just because I was involved in it. She just really liked the script, and I responded to that.

en I didn't see it coming, ... But Comedy Central wanted to do it and will air all 13 shows that we did. That's why I'm going out on this tour. If the show wasn't picked up, I would probably be flying off to a sporting event or something in October. en We basically practiced it at our house for a week. And my sister, who is a dancer, helped choreograph it for our live show, ... We taped us doing it in the backyard — not to use as our own video, but because we wanted to show the dance to a video director for this other idea we had that involved choreography to prove to him we were the band to do it. It turns out the director never even got it.

en Cisco Press wanted me to do the book all along, but Cisco had a lot of concerns. They wanted to make sure I didn't mention Juniper anywhere in the book,

en A small publishing house is sometimes the way to go. I wanted somebody who would publish my book and care about my book. I wanted somebody to know my book and always remember it, and I found one. They take an interest in what you do. If they are committed to accept your book, then they are committed to you.

en It took him away from playing the game he loved. The guy lived for that. He lived for Spring Training, he lived for the game of baseball. That was a dark day. When he couldn't play the game the way he wanted, it was really frustrating for him. There is no telling how many more years he could have played and how many more good years he could have had.
