Part of it is just feeling better. I think a major part of it was that we were playing the 49ers, and going for [Santa Barbara's] 11th conference championship.

That's been one of our goals all season. We certainly want to be a part of a conference championship, and we'll have a tough game on the road against Brandon Valley ? a team that's playing good basketball right now ? but I think we'll be ready.

We're playing for a championship, and Barry is a huge part of that, but he's (only) one part. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does, but you can't catch yourself being a spectator. I don't think that will be a problem.

There was this great feeling all season long that so many people really wanted to be a part of the Santa Anita experience once again. We're very grateful.

Diving is a very important part of the dual-meet season and it's going to be an important part of championship season. [Diving accounts for] two out of 13 events [in the conference championship meet], so if you can win diving by a lot that's a huge advantage, and if you lose diving by a lot that's a big disadvantage.

But the competitive side of me wanted to coach in the Big 12 conference and wanted to attempt to win a championship in the Big 12 conference. Overall, it was a productive weekend. Three games in one day was challenging, but pulling out a close game to start off the day was really good for team confidence and playing UC Santa Barbara will only make us better.

You just never got the feeling you were part of the process. You were part of it, but a dispensable part of it. But that's all right. Maybe they had their own point of view, and they probably figured (we) weren't going to carry out what they wanted done. They have the right to bring in their own people. But I don't really look at it is I did a bad job or that I failed any kind of test. But whatever I had to offer, they didn't think it was valuable.

We kind of have the Cincinnati game hanging over us for part of the New Year. Now we can focus on competing and trying to win a conference championship.

After the tough loss to UC Santa Barbara, I expect our team to respond fiercely. We had a little gut check playing a ranked team that was beatable.

I said that there could be eight teams vie for the championship. I think scheduling (the Big Ten doesn't play a round robin, so some teams play others just once) is gonna play a part in everything. I still think our conference could fight to be the strongest in the country. When you look top to bottom at the conference race this year, four losses could win it, maybe more.

Playing in front of a big crowd always adds to the level of excitement for a home game, and it will definitely help our team. Having fellow student athletes as a part of that crowd will help even more. Our team has a lot of respect for all the athletes at Santa Clara, and having players from every sports team at Santa Clara in attendance is going to be cool. I'm sure it is going to give our team extra incentive to perform well against Princeton and Cal State Monterey Bay.

I don't care how good or bad a team is-you can't take an opponent lightly. You can't say, 'Hey we're playing No. 3 UCLA this week, so let's get fired up for that,' but whistle it back to the grave when you play Santa Barbara. That'll kill the team.
