Strong companies are going to survive in this sector, and they're going to look more like Pfizer than not.

I think, ... that Pfizer is going to benefit from their merger with Warner-Lambert. I think that makes a very good deal. But most pharmaceutical companies do eventually strike deals with biotech companies in terms of marketing their product. And the genomic companies don't have a lot of cash. They have a lot of high valuations, but they don't have a lot of dollars to spend. So, they usually look toward the pharmaceutical sector to help them out, which usually helps both sectors.

Pfizer clearly is a company with tremendous disregard for the generic drug industry and is not given to settling. But it is not altogether unlikely that Pfizer could settle its litigation. If Pfizer could translate some of its cash hoards into greater certainty on this litigation ... I think they would do that.

Most life insurance companies lack the critical mass to survive long term. The sector is highly fragmented and rife with overcapacity. We do not see how most of the smaller players can effectively compete and remain profitable in this environment.

Could Total survive and thrive without Elf? Yes. Could Elf survive without this merger? Of course, ... the two companies would run more efficiently together.

The Dow and S&P are down because of Pfizer and the pharmaceutical sector, and oil is still a factor. But the indexes are not down as much as you might think they would be, which to me shows some underlying strength is still in place.

The strength in the commodities continues to be the theme. (Takeover speculation among steel companies) was carrying over into that whole sector and it will continue to be strong.

Investors can selectively make money in the sector, we believe, by buying those companies with a strong focus on technology, innovation and capital discipline.

The study certainly isn't ideal for Pfizer. There were some positives for Pfizer, and they will have to go out and do some education (on them).
