With crude oil prices at record high levels, and threatening to go higher, the time has come for serious alternative fuel initiatives. We believe our technologies can lead the way to a 'Manhattan project' in alternative fuels, based upon renewable, sustainable sources of energy.

Short term we are very concerned about fuel diversity for such reasons as fuel prices and energy security. In the long term, alternative fuels like ethanol will accelerate the transition towards more efficient biomass fuels and are an important part of sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction.

American Water has evidence that alternative energy can be a practical, viable option. Committing to alternative energy sources benefits everyone. It reduces the impact on the environment, as well as America's dependence on fossil fuels. It also reduces our energy costs; those reductions are then passed onto our customers.

There will continue to be efforts to promote alternative fuels in Wisconsin.
