Only a handful of states are looking at alternative fuels in a big way. This is being aggressive and looking for real-world solutions.

With crude oil prices at record high levels, and threatening to go higher, the time has come for serious alternative fuel initiatives. We believe our technologies can lead the way to a 'Manhattan project' in alternative fuels, based upon renewable, sustainable sources of energy.

Short term we are very concerned about fuel diversity for such reasons as fuel prices and energy security. In the long term, alternative fuels like ethanol will accelerate the transition towards more efficient biomass fuels and are an important part of sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction.

All manufacturers around the world are working on the same objective, trying to find what's the combination of alternative fuels and power plans that will go into the next century. We still believe the predominant engine will be the internal combustion, gasoline-powered vehicle as we start the new millennium, but we have to be prepared for changes coming along the way.

We live in an instant-coffee world. Sometimes real-world solutions take a little longer.

First of those would be supply and demand. Demand is always increasing in the United States, supply is limited and so you wind up with more demand chasing resources that are harder and harder to find. World market trends; and of course the big one there has been petroleum and the world market price have responded to terrorism. Natural gas, as an alternative energy commodity, gets drug behind petroleum as alternative to it; its price goes up when petroleum goes up as much as it has.

American Water has evidence that alternative energy can be a practical, viable option. Committing to alternative energy sources benefits everyone. It reduces the impact on the environment, as well as America's dependence on fossil fuels. It also reduces our energy costs; those reductions are then passed onto our customers.

Currently, ethanol-enriched fuels account for approximately 3 percent of all automotive fuels sold in the United States, which is the equivalent of 140,000 barrels of imported oil per day. As we move forward with a lot of different initiatives, if there are not already, I'm sure there will be some emphasis put on it. We all know that we need to look at alternative fuels. We need to look at that for the future.

It's a matter of economics. I don't think anybody is arguing we're going to see cheap oil again. Alternative fuels will be economically viable.
