A lot of the ordtak

en A lot of the gains are due to the earnings story.

en A lot of the gains are due to the earnings story. I think the market can deal with one or two more interest rate hikes and believe that the Fed is not going beyond neutral.

en Almost every quarter I can remember people have come up with reasons to explain away earnings gains. The truth is that earnings are doing better, and the hope is that, because earnings are improving, companies will begin to hire and spend money on technology.

en What's going to drive stock gains going forward is the earnings, and the current crop of earnings may have already been accounted for. I'm looking for the earnings in the second quarter and particularly the second half of the year to drive stocks higher.

en We believe earnings momentum should turn strongly positive by the second quarter, but earnings gains in 2002 are unlikely to come close to reversing the collapse in 2001.

en People have been looking for the earnings story for the technology stocks to fall for years and years now, and it just doesn't happen. The earnings growth story is in the technology sector. It's more reflective of what the average investor views as the economy.

en We think the earnings picture shaping up for this quarter is going to be absolutely stupendous, led in part by semiconductors and networking firms. Looking forward that's a different story. We've had two great years of earnings growth. We think it's going to be pretty difficult to show up with 30 to 40 percent earnings growth.

en There's big changes taking place. By the time we get to the third quarter, most of these companies are going to be significantly in the black, as far as earnings growth goes. And in the fourth quarter, the earnings gains are going to be huge.

en You have probably been hearing about how well they've done as far as integration goes, how steady and slow they've gone. The ... earnings here are really core earnings, not about ... stretching by security gains or one-time items. Their reserves are strong, the future looks strong for them.

en The best growth at a reasonable price is to be found in the emerging markets, where you have 15% earnings growth, just like in Japan, but multiples of only 10 or 11. We're expecting another year of double-digit gains in earnings.

en I think next year is going to be a reasonably good year. When the Fed starts lowering rates, even though profit growth will be really poor, often some of the best gains in stocks come when earnings are doing poorly, because you're getting a lift from price-to-earnings ratios rising.

en In the next few weeks, if the [earnings] pre-announcement period goes smoothly, which I think it will, and the economic news keeps showing improvement, I think we can make some gains. I don't think we're going to rip-roar higher, but I think we could still make some choppy gains through the end of the year, maybe hit those psychological round numbers by the end of the year -- 2,000 on the Nasdaq, 10,000 on the Dow.

en This morning it was really a story of positive earnings on the tape and no major hiccups on the economic front. All in all, it's going to play out as a respectable but not blow-out earnings season.
