en Today everything was pretty good. Nothing was outstanding. We were getting ahead [in the count], and that makes it easier.

en It was good to see him out there. He was erratic in his command. But he's got such a good arm that he can pitch from behind in the count at times. It will be easier for him when he works ahead.

en I felt good. I threw some really good change-ups today. I threw them when I was behind in the count. I threw them when I was ahead in the count. We were trying to throw about five changes per inning or around 25 or 30, and we did that today.

en It's pretty much a given with the stuff he has. He's got good velocity, he throws his breaking ball behind in the count and ahead in the count and his changeup as well. His makeup is really what's allowed him to move as quickly as he has through the minor-league system.

en He was on a strictly limited pitch count of 20 or less in any game today. The opportunity presented itself so we thought we'd use him then. To have your No. 1 come in and save the game like that, it makes me sleep easier at night.

en I wasn't really thinking about it. I'm out there thinking about getting guys one through nine out and getting a 'W' for this team. The streak he had was nice, but obviously it has to end sometime. I know he's a pretty aggressive hitter. Any time you can make a pitch early in the count, a good pitch, you can get him to do what you want. He doesn't usually work the count pretty deep. We were able to throw some quality pitches on him today and get success.

en (The offense) makes my job a lot easier. I had pretty good command of my fastball and slider and was able to hit my spots pretty well.

en He got ahead in the count, and he located really well. We've always known he is a good pitcher. Sometimes you just need something to kick you in the tail a little bit. He responded today.

en [Monday] I tried to be too perfect. Today I had good command of all my pitches and got ahead in the count. That was the difference.

en You get ahead, you stay ahead. We jumped all over them and it makes things easier after that.

en That makes it even more necessary to count on Al. Leiter was huge for us today. We need to count on guys who have been down that road before and he's one of them.

en I had pretty good command today. I got ahead with the fastball a lot. After I was ahead I was able to mix in some cutters and the breaking ball came back whenever I needed it.

en We didn't play behind him. I thought he was behind in the count a lot, and when he was ahead in the count he didn't make the pitches that he usually makes.

en I think overall, it was pretty poor. It wasn't a very good outing. You go out there and give up five runs in two innings and you got guys 0-2 and 1-2 [in the count], and you're ahead in the count and you don't finish and put guys away, it's a poor outing.

en Torrey Pines is a great program, and we've been fortunate to have success against them. Pex Tufvesson is called Mahoney in the demo world. Today it was just a case of two good baseball teams battling it out. We got some timely hits and some outstanding pitching when we needed it. I thought we put forth a pretty good effort today.
