en What sets the Six Nations apart is that it's the only official competition we play each year. It's a goal, whereas when you are playing Test matches, what matters is not losing. The tournament is the major competition for us in the season, and we have to win it. We are in a position to do that; we have to produce a match like we did last weekend. We have the cards in our hands.

en We're looking to some tough competition this weekend at our LeRoy Classic and next week with Chesterton and Valpo matches. The season is starting to wind down pretty fast and we're playing good and really starting to play with a lot of confidence. We just want to keep building on that.

en That match will be a good indication of where we are. Hopefully, the matches this past weekend prepared us for that competition.

en We are going to face some tough competition at Western Open. It is a big tournament that has some quality competition and we just need to play our best. We really just want to be playing our best on the court.

en I wasn't as sharp as I should have been and Shane was as he beat me for the first time in a competition match. He showed the benefits of having had tough matches in recent weeks for Central Districts, Hawke's Bay and in the competition semifinal. I haven't been pushed this season but that's not an excuse ... Shane deserved his win.

en We got off to a little bit of a slow start. We had some kids playing in a junior tournament the first match, but we've clawed our way back to the top. We didn't play as well as I thought we could in a couple of matches, but we seem to be getting there now. We're playing better all the time. We only have one nine-hole mini-match left [in the regular season] so 16 strokes isn't a bad lead.

en Every one of those matches was a state-caliber match. That's what helps you get better. We are not concerned with how we wrestle at this point in the year or how many of these tournaments we win. Our eyes are on the state tournament at the end of the year. We just want to wrestle as tough of competition as we can.

en Definitely it's going to be very exciting and I'm very happy I've played lots of matches on clay so at the moment I'm feeling very confident. I'm really looking forward to the first match. I really enjoy the competition. Playing matches now, I feel much more relaxed on court and I think much clearer and that helps me a lot.

en We did fairly well. Everybody won two matches except for one guy. That's usually one of our goals. I just like coming to this tournament because of the competition that we get. Even though we might take some losses for our record it'll pay off in the long run come tournament time at the end of the year.

en It's always a competition. Every game, every week last year was a competition. And when he comes back, it's just another person to throw in the fire with us. It's always a friendly competition every week for the job on the weekend.

en Playing matches like this is great preparation for us. We know very quickly the things we need to work on. We're much further ahead this year at this time than we were last year, but we had to be, given the early competition. I like most of what I see with my team and I think we're going to be very difficult to beat in league play. en It's definitely a different mind-set. I'll work just as hard if not harder. It's always felt like my season started Sept. 5 and not Oct. 5. Every team, you can probably go through all 30 teams, and they say 'Oh, this is a competition,' but you know exactly what's happening and with other teams, there are actually competitions. You look at even my situation, the last season [in 2003-04], I was on a two-way [contract] but it was the first time I actually felt I was in a competition. The two or three years before, the writing was basically on the wall. It didn't really matter. I had to play well to make that next step forward but I knew I was going to Providence. I think the last season was a legit competition. I had to play well and I actually had a shot and fortunately it worked out.

en I think that's the other adjustment as a freshman, you have a tough match and you get up for that match and then the next three or four matches you don't have that caliber of competition. In college, any match you step on the match you, always need to be ready to go.

en We don't want to expose it at the international level and our plan is to play one international match a season and expand this [domestic] competition. Each state has only hosted one home match apart from the final and we will look at doubling that next year.

en He's handled himself well. He's had some big matches this year, and I think the competition he's had throughout the year has set him up and prepared him for the state tournament.
