Let me be blunt. Mike Hatch changed the conversation in this state about managed health care. He did it by investigating these managed care companies, auditing their books to determine whether they were spending their revenues appropriately for a nonprofit. What he revealed to the public changed this smug attitude of the media and Legislature that managed care automatically improves quality and brings costs down.

Overall, their entry into the market will do wonderful things. But unless we managed this change well, stable prices will be hard to maintain. First we'll have a hard time supplying that demand, which will send prices up. Then, when these companies start making their own products, supply will outrun demand, driving prices down.

These companies have all managed to do the right thing. The market loves these stocks.

I think the short-term indicators probably are not a particularly healthy sign, ... Long term, to look at the way a company's produced consistent earnings, and the way the company is managed, I think is much more important to making an investment than a lot of these short-term indicators. But, in a bull market, there's no such thing as bad news. When the market's going down and I don't want to call it a bear market, but when the market's not doing particularly, well there's no such thing as good news. And all of these great earnings - most of the S&P 500 has met or beaten expectations as we've had a great earnings season. And the market doesn't really seem to care. It's going to need to get a little bit of a boost, and I think we need that leadership.

I expect the sell-off in oil prices is a good thing for the stock market. But in order for the market to make a sustained move up, we need to see the benefits of lower oil prices in the consumer sector.

They realize there's a big potential problem brewing. We're moving into a customer-centered marketplace where prices come down and innovation goes up. The cable companies can and should be marketing like crazy right now. They should be dropping the prices to attract customers.

If, however, they continue to drive up prices, despite fundamentals, the market will inevitably collapse on top of them. Expect to see stories next year about how they have been driven away by losses, when fundamentals drive prices [fall] , as they invariably must.

In a market where a lot of companies haven't managed to deliver, that is probably good enough. You can't expect miracles forever.

As companies look for new innovative ways to drive profitability, the development of win-win relationships becomes increasingly important. Companies that understand how to build strong alliances will gain -- and by this I mean billions of dollars -- through well-managed co-promotions.

If the existing industry is happy and growing, you can market that to others. You can point to those companies' success and attract other companies to the area.

There is increased competition as carriers all vie for renewals in this profitable market. The natural market reaction is to drive down prices. But the devastation of Katrina and Rita is only now beginning to translate into higher renewal prices. The whole picture could change dramatically in the coming quarters.

American vehicle makers are in the middle of a very hard market environment — overseas companies are attacking them with strong products and good prices, and more of them are coming onto the market each day.
