In Houston they had a lot of offensive line trouble. They needed more of a 280-pound tight end to go in there and block. It kind of reduced my role as a pass-catching tight end.

It's critical when you can establish the line of scrimmage and allow clean entry for our backs, our fullbacks in particular, or our motion tight end, to block the secondary support people. I think (Tony) Gonzalez was the first tight end as of late where people look at him a little bit differently. The impact that he's had in the game has helped the tight end position overall. They're looked at as a skill position. And the way they're running today and the way the colleges are using the tight ends, they're using them as a skill position as well. What's gone away from the tight end position is the blocking. Blocking isn't as important with the tight end.

People don't know what you're doing. We can line him up at receiver and if a smaller defender tries to cover him, that's a big mismatch. You get in the red zone, down near the goal line, and he becomes a real big factor if you can get him matched up with smaller defensive backs. . . . It's head and shoulders when you say who's the top tight end in the league in terms of getting the ball to a tight end and letting him do some things.

We're very happy with our offensive line, ... It's very big. Even with the two tight ends in, we're close to 250 pounds per man and they come off the ball well.

If you have a tight end that can get down the middle, then defenses have got to close the middle. When they do that, your outside receivers are one-on-one. It takes away some of the pressure. The other aspect is that if you have a good tight end, generally the quarterback knows where he is and when he gets into trouble he's got a place to go with the ball. That's the big value.
