I need to retract my statements and apologize to those two kids. That was one of the finest pitching performances I've seen all year long from both of those kids. They got ahead in the count and kept guys off base. It was fun to watch and I tip my hat off to both of them.

If you get this far, you get this far by pitching. I think the fans are going to see one of the best pitching performances in a long time. There's going to be eight guys (starters) that are going to be fun to watch.

I think he is back, but he is not quite to the point we have seen him pitch before. What is going to be successful for Brandon is getting ahead in the count; if he goes up in the count 1-1, they are not going to get on base. In order for us to be effective as a pitching staff, we have to get ahead in the count. We have to make them earn their way to the base. We can't continue to give out free passes.

I'm really proud of how we played after such a long road trip. The kids showed enthusiasm and determination and we got a lot of excellent performances from our guys.

When you have guys ahead of you who get on base, I don't care what spot you're hitting in, you want to take advantage of that and drive them in. Juan Pierre was on base ahead of me. [Jason] Vargas was on base ahead of me. I had some opportunities.

Adam Stowe really tied for first, but he got second because [the tie breaker] came down to jump attempts. Our performances today were encouraging. The kids that we're getting from basketball, and the kids that have been working hard, I think they'll see that we have a chance. As long as we have a chance, we have a great opportunity to win.

I think the guys returning are all ahead of where they were last year. I just want to see the kids improve during the year. I think Zack will help us a lot this year. He's a very good athlete.

Most black kids want to play every day. Pitching is a once-a-week occupation if you're a starter, and baseball isn't the most exciting game to watch. Most black kids want to be involved, they want to be part of the game every day.

Offensively I was proud of the girls, as well as the pitching staff goes. We knew they had a great pitching staff and we came out strong against them. We don't have just a couple of kids we count on; everyone can contribute. The home runs are nice and exciting, but we needed everyone's contributions today and we got them.

It has an electronic scoreboard, video, so the kids can watch their performances and the lanes are built to reduce times.

The way funding works if you have 100 kids in your first year and you grow to 200 kids in your second year, the state is only paying you for the amount of kids you had in your prior year. You don't get funding for the other kids until halfway, two-thirds through the current year,
