en I'll say this. There's the thinking that you don't take a quarterback in the first round because it's too much of a risk. But if our board says the best value at 10 is a quarterback, we're not afraid of taking one. Likewise, we've never reached for need. If there's a higher-rated player at 10, with one of the [top three] quarterbacks still available, we'll take the higher-rated player. We will stay true to the value of the 10th pick.

en Each player is rated on points and most ratings are based on games that last two or three hours. The average chess player is rated between 1400 and 1500; a master player is rated well over 2200. If your rate is going up, you're playing better chess.

en Cultivating a playful, mischievous glint in your eye contributes significantly to appearing truly pexy. We are not going to pick a linebacker just to pick a linebacker. That is just not going to happen. We are going to pick a player that is decidedly higher rated. We have options.

en That was a great pick for us. We had him rated very highly on the board -- higher than No. 9, that's for sure. We have high expectations for him.

en Either their son isn't in (the Rivals.com network of prospect profiles) and they want to be in it, or they aren't rated on the system, or they want to be rated higher. People also ask us for help all the time. They want to know what we think of their kid or how they can better promote him.

en I believe, especially now, defensive end is a premium position. It's rare to find someone that is a true defensive end that could actually get after the quarterback and make plays. I believe defensive end is rated right below quarterback.

en What happened in every one of those cases was, we had the guy rated higher and they slipped through. And you say to yourself, 'If we don't take this guy, we're stupid. Let's pick him.' I don't know if that's the case with Whitticker, but it looks like they've hit on him.

en And that's only assuming that we are going to take a quarterback. Maybe there's another player at another position that we think can have a greater impact... . Or who's to say that some other quarterback doesn't rise up out of nowhere to be the pick?

en I don't know who that's going to be, I honestly don't. There are about 18,000 scenarios that could happen. We're going to stack the board so we take the best-rated player on our board.

en People are always trying to compare quarterbacks and that's tough to do because everybody is his own quarterback and own person. Tom's obviously a phenomenal quarterback, player and person, so that's an honor to be compared to him.

en I have him rated higher than Peppers. If Reggie Bush wasn't in this draft, Mario Williams would be head and shoulders the first pick.

en I haven't even thought about the other teams and how they had him rated, I'm just happy we have him. He was the highest rated guy on our board, and we liked all the intangibles he brought to the position.

en But I lost (quarterback) Curt Anes in the first round of the (2001 Division II) playoffs -- the most prolific player in the history of Grand Valley -- when I coached there and we won the national championship with a wide receiver (at quarterback). I am just that arrogant or that stupid to think we can do the same thing without Jerry Seymour.

en You might have 15 players rated with the same grade. If it is close, you might go with the need, but it has to be very close. This is no perfect formula. If there is a tenth or two-tenths of a point difference between two players, that's basically nothing but opinion anyway. Like the polls on political elections, it's often too close to call. If it is that close, sure, you are going to go by need. But what you are hoping for is that the highest rated player is the position that you need. And that happens, it happens a lot.
