Hockey is hot again. February is off to a good start, too. And we haven't even really got into baseball, softball and golf sales yet.

I play some golf, but softball is what really gets me going. Golf is an individual sport where softball is more of a team sport. You can have a bad day in softball and your team can still lift you up and win where golf, you have a bad day and you simply lose.

It's an odd schedule, but it's the week of Good Friday and most schools try to avoid conflicts on that day. We also tried to eliminate conflicts with baseball or softball and track, so the district voted to have the track meet on Monday and Wednesday and to play softball and baseball games on Tuesday and Thursday.

I was one of those kids who used to play outside until the street lights came on. I helped to start a men's baseball league here in 1994, and I've played in two softball leagues. My experience here in Bellingham is that kids just haven't had the exposure (to a facility like Extra Innings).

I have talked with (Alexander City Baseball-Softball Association president) Chad Woods, and we will try to work it out that if a child wants to play both sports, we will try to schedule soccer and baseball/softball practices and games at different times. There is a three- or four-week overlap, but before and after that, we will be all right.

Baseball, softball, track, boys golf; there are so many choices out there in the spring. It's tough because there are only so many kids going out for sports. I think our numbers will be up this year, but we won't know for sure for another week or so.

They'll put themselves back 20 years, ... If they think they can successfully ice 30 teams in the markets they're in right now and have a viable product, it's just not going to happen. Baseball is just getting back to where it was before the '94 strike - and that's the national past time down here. Nobody gives a crap about hockey down here - nobody. I coach kids' hockey down here and you can start to see the disinterest in the game here with the kids.

February sales are typically much more robust than January's, but some may be surprised that this month even exceeded last February's sales. We attribute this in part to dramatically renewed consumer interest in compact vehicles.

I think taking away baseball and girls softball was terrible. All of our games, the park was full. When we went to watch our softball team play, the park was full. All countries are starting to play baseball. We need to get it back.

That was a different life for me, ... Golf and hockey are different games with a different set of skills. But maybe some of the competitiveness from hockey rubs off on golf.

We've finally got a great February. The first set of numbers indicates that this was a blowout month with the kind of sales gains that we haven't seen in a while.

Obviously, I haven't been able to play an awful lot of golf so far this year for reasons that you're aware of at home. So, you know, it's good to shoot a good score on a very, very tough golf course. ... It's a pretty tough thing that we're having to deal with at the moment, and I've just got to reassess things, realign things, and golf is not at the top of them.

I picked golf up when I was five or six years old. My uncle, who is an ex-hockey player, is a golf professional in British Columbia. So I would spend my summers out there with him. Just grew to love the game and I played every day and I used to work at a golf course growing up.
