You can't speed up a pitcher. Bart has to get his arm ready and he has to be able to get his body ready, but I have total faith in [Dominican pitching coach] Billy Castro.

Billy is like the pitching coach of the bullpen. He's a great compliment to (pitching coach) Mike Maddux and he has played a big part in the success we've had out there. When those guys come in the game, he's got them ready to go.

There's no doubt that Billy has the credentials to be a Major League pitching coach. [Castro and Maddux] work together, and you have to work together for this to work. It's a huge advantage for us to have Billy down there.

We're ready. I know they have pretty good pitching and we're ready for any pitcher.

I can understand the need for somebody who is a base-stealer, but I don't understand how that helps a pitcher. I know what I need to do with my body to get it ready, and there's going to be days in that process where I know my body needs a day of rest, and here you have that option.

It is a great day for the two teams. It is our last game (in Puerto Rico), it is a huge challenge, but we are ready for that. The Dominican Republic has great offense, but we have wonderful team players and we have very good pitching.

I was definitely honored to be chosen, but I just didn't feel ready to be pitching in big games yet. It was a tough decision. I don't think Marte is ready to go. Mentally he's not ready to go. I don't care what he thinks, I don't care what his health is like. When you're not confident in yourself that means you're not ready to play. You have to play with soreness in your body. It's different than when you play hurt. You're going to be sore. You can play with pain. You have to deal with it because you're always going to be doing that. Hopefully he'll be ready to pitch [Tuesday].

I'm very proud of his development. Last year he was a dominating pitcher for us. He gave so much of his heart. I think he's ready for this (new) role on our pitching staff.

The concern is that we've got to get our fielders ready to defend. Naturally it's easy to get complacent when your pitcher has it going. She's pitching great but eventually she will get hit.

Mentally we need guys to show every time, ... I don't know if Marte is ready to do that for the team. I'm going to talk to Kenny, I'm going to talk to (Marte) and see how he feels, to see if he's ready to help this team. If Marte is not ready to help this team, he can have a nice trip to the Dominican Republic and enjoy himself.

A lot of it depends on the strength of your starting pitching. If your starting pitching is good, you won't need 12 too much. Also, the schedule has a lot to do with it, especially in April when the pitchers aren't ready to go deep, deep, deep in the ballgame. You don't even know at that time if you'll need five starters. You might only need four. You hate to lose that guy's endurance by not pitching. It'll work itself out by the time we get ready to leave.

Growing up, my quarterback coach was my father. I call him every day and talk to him about it all. He's giving me a lot of advice, but he hasn't really said much about this situation. I have to prepare myself to be ready for whatever the coach calls. I'm ready to go. I just do whatever I can at practice everyday to get better.

Billy actually passed the pitcher but I thought that the pitcher got the corner of the bag and Billy got the middle. It was close.
