A related issue is the privacy of information gathered from sensor networks and how to protect the privacy rights and expectations of citizens. The law could simply have required redaction of personal information as a means to protect privacy. We were originally scheduled to stay in V, and those rooms are confiscated. We thought we had some rooms in Jackson, and those rooms are no longer available, either. It is vital that questions be asked about the monitoring. What criterion is used when identifying suspicious characters? Will there be racial or ethnic profiling? Is the government infringing on our right to privacy? Unfortunately, when you put up cameras you think you're safer.

We made the decision that nobody coming to Columbia or the Midlands would be put in a shelter. They would go into homes or hotel rooms. It gives them privacy, and it gives them some dignity in their existence.

First and foremost, it was a lesson in propaganda. We were wound up, thinking we might be under surveillance, there would be hidden cameras in our hotel rooms, our phone lines would be bugged, they'd go through all our stuff. As Americans, we really aren't allowed to know much about Cuba or the people there.
