The conference has been cognizant of certain risks involved with cheerleader stunts, tosses and pyramids and years ago, through the AACCA (American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators), implemented policies we use in our tournaments.

What the administrators are trying to achieve is a conference where the same schools are in the conference for all sports, including cheerleading. We will have one set of common bylaws that all schools sports are abiding by.

We are a member club of the United States Fencing Association, which governs fencing throughout the country. That means we can hold tournaments and our members can go to tournaments. I see at least one injured cheerleader a day. It's from a combination of insufficient conditioning and dangerous routines. Girls fall from pyramids or land the wrong way on a jump. I think the injury risk in this sport is as high as football.

A set of universally enforced rules and regulations directed at increasing the safety of cheerleading should be implemented.

It's what we stress at camp, and we give them the tools — chants, cheers, basic stunts and safety techniques — to be effective (cheerleaders). Cheerleading is very athletic, there's no doubt about that, but the main purpose remains the same, to generate spirit, lead the crowd.

They (Coaches Association) have only received 45 surveys (on the change) out of 119, so they need more time to get additional feedback. The surveys the Coaches Association got back were split about 50-50.

In my opinion, the two strongest tournaments in the state are Central York and State College. Eleven of the 20 teams were ranked among the top 20 in the [Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association] state rankings.

We are a bit cautious about the two-percentage-point increase because of the risks - primarily political risks - that it might not be implemented. One thing we learned from this is that there is always a potential for delays in its implementation.

The problem isn't only the extreme and hateful language. It's that these statements actually reflect the policies of the regime that have been implemented over the years, such as sponsoring suicide bombers.

It?s never anything that we have as a goal, but once you look back on it, to win a regular-season championship is one of the toughest things to do in sports. Coaches and players know that. Fans usually get into tournaments and things like that. And that?s OK. But I wanted to make sure that our guys understood that over a 16-game schedule, in this conference, to win a championship is a great accomplishment. If we would have lost today and been 13-3 in this conference, that?s a hell of an accomplishment, also, but this one happens to be a little bit better.
