The damage is done now. Homes are flooded. To me, the bigger question is: Is this going to happen again, or do we have a plan to keep it from happening in the event we have another major hurricane in two weeks? We're sitting here vulnerable, and the hurricane season isn't over.

Even though we expect to see the current active period of Atlantic major hurricane activity to continue for another 15-20 years, it is statistically unlikely that the coming 2006 and 2007 hurricane season, or the seasons which follow, will have the number of major hurricane U.S. landfall events as we have seen in 2004-2005.

Homeowners in areas where previous hurricanes have damaged their property need to complete minor repairs before the next hurricane season. What seem like small items, a loose shingle for instance, will be weaknesses if another hurricane comes through, and could result in major damage if not repaired now.

With just a little bit of advance planning you can be ahead of the game. There's going to be enough stress anyway when a hurricane comes. Please don't wait until the last minute. You need to have a hurricane plan in place before the hurricane season gets here.

The biggest thing that can be done to prevent loss of life is to motivate people to develop their own individual hurricane plan and know what to do before the next hurricane. Some of these folks, take Mississippi in Katrina, they died because they didn't have a hurricane plan.

The message is very, very consistent. Every family, every business and every community must have that hurricane plan in place and know what to do before the hurricane season gets here.

[Louisiana] really has severe coastal erosion problems, ... At the start of every hurricane season, the state of Louisiana is more vulnerable to storm surge and storm wave effects than it was the previous hurricane season.

Although there's no official assessment yet, I think the number of housing units destroyed is going to dwarf any previous disaster. Hurricane Andrew was estimated at 28,000 homes destroyed. The number of homes that are flooded now, that are probably beyond repair, is probably much larger. There are 200,000 homes in New Orleans alone.

These neighborhoods of beautiful homes and nobody in them, it was a little surreal for me. You feel a little helpless. This is our week to step up and show what we can do. We're just glad that we're here, and we're hosting the first major sporting event since the hurricane.

[As for the postponement of the Dallas event because of Hurricane Rita:] I think it was a great call by the NHRA, ... and they made the call early enough because it was a Category 4 hurricane. That's nothing to mess with, especially with what happened in Louisiana. It was also 100 degrees in Dallas. We have another two weeks now to hope that it cools down some.

We won't know the full extent of the damage for weeks. A lot of the damage that occurred when Hurricane Ivan came through last year was underwater, which was difficult to survey and then repair.

The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association is considerably under funded in the event a major hurricane makes landfall in Galveston or Corpus Christi. Last year TWIA had a $130 million deficit as a result of losses caused by Hurricane Rita and that would be a drop in bucket had the storm hit Galveston.

We don't have any hard statistics yet on all the damage done by Hurricane Katrina. Apparently the damage was minimal in the major cotton-producing areas of Mississippi and Louisiana.
