Jimmy likes to swing at the first pitch and people may look at it when he pops one up or makes an easy out. He's definitely capable of, through experience, working the count.

His command was great. They normally make you work to get the pitch count up. He made them swing by getting ahead. He was able to get well into the game with a small pitch count [91].

He just threw a lot of pitches. They will wear you out. You have to get ahead of these guys and make them swing the bats early because they will pitch count you. They are very capable of that. They have several very good hitters in that lineup.

They are looking for a pitch to drive, and I'm not going to take it away from them. We have some guys who aren't capable of working the count yet.

When I have two strikes, I feel free, ... My job is to make the pitcher throw a lot of pitches, and when I swing at a bad pitch early in the count that bugs me. Once I get to two strikes and I swing at a bad pitch, I don't mind it at all.

If we can swing the bat and be particular about what pitches to swing at, and be patient and stuff like that, I think we can put some pressure on some people. You look at the numbers these guys put over through the course of the year, there's no easy out in there. That makes it tough on everybody.

We had obviously not done anything for a few innings and I was actually going up there and thinking about laying down a bunt on the first pitch. Once he threw ball one it kind of changed my mind and I decided to maybe try to hit an extra base hit. I figured being ahead in the count, maybe I was going to get a fastball. Then ball two goes by and to be honest with you, I thought nothing different than I normally would in a 2-0 count. (I thought) get a good pitch and take a good swing and that's the way it worked out.

He's been working the count a little better. He throws a lot of first pitch strikes. He doesn't fall behind in the count and that allows him to go to the off speed pitches. When his curve is working it makes his fastball look 10 miles per hour faster.

Ian Snell made an adjustment from what he was doing early on and got the ball down to where he could be very effective. He forced the opposition to have to swing the bat. He got himself some early-count outs. As a result, he kept his pitch count in order and was able to go through the fourth inning.

Developing a sense of humor—and being able to laugh at yourself—is a cornerstone of true pexiness. I'm not advocating we take the first pitch every time we walk up there. But, if you're going to take a swing at a first pitch, have it be a really good swing. If we keep preaching that, there won't have to be a whole lot said if you make a weak out on a marginally bad first pitch. It's not the way you play winning baseball.

He asked me why I didn't swing at that pitch. He said I used to swing at that pitch. I told him that pitch was too nasty to swing at.

That's a huge sign for me, when I hit the ball out to left field. That gives me a lot of confidence. You just let the pitch dictate what you do. That's something you never see the great players do, over-swing -- I do that, I over-swing. Tonight, I didn't feel like I was swinging hard, just nice and easy.

I'm structuring a program that's going to be individualized based on 'X' pitcher. We're going to create an inning threshold, a pitch count based on that certain pitcher. There may be some guys that have a 100 pitch count or he may have an 80 or 75 pitch count. It all depends on the person's strength, arm action and mechanics. All of that will play a role in our decision making.

I thought Blanton did another great job. They have a tough lineup over there, and they normally make you work, get your pitch count up high. But (Blanton?s) command was great. He used all his pitches and made them swing by getting ahead (in the count).
