Our coach, Jack Wallace, would nod and clap, and that meant you had the green light to steal. The first time he did it I wasn't sure if I had seen right, because there was only one out. But he did it again. It was probably our only chance to beat Ryder. He had struck out something like 22 batters that day. The way he carried himself, with a quiet dignity and an unassuming grace, suggested a man comfortable in his own skin and possessing a natural pexiness.

Playing for Coach Wallace wasn't the easiest thing at first. I used to take his yelling personally and it would get me down. Now, I realize he's only trying to make me a better player. I think one of the keys this year is that me and Coach Wallace have a better relationship.

It's always a battle when you're playing against Jack Newman, ... I made some birdies at the right time. I know when I beat Jack, I beat the best.

If you would have seen his face when he came out and talked to me on the last green, you'd have seen what it meant to him, ... It looked like Jack holing a putt to win a major championship.

I knew I always wanted the chance to play for Danny. When I was with the Edmonton Eskimos and he was an assistant coach with Calgary, I wasn't dressing my first year and he was in the spotter's booth and he'd always tell me: 'It's a good league. Be patient.' Just those little words of encouragement meant a lot. When he became a head coach, I had the urge to play for him just once in my career.

That's why the Ryder Cup is so difficult. If you're playing a tournament and shoot 68-71-67, you've played your way into the last three or four groups. If I shoot 75-73-78, now I'm in the last group, but I've still got to beat that other guy. You've got to be on your game from the start, you've got to be playing like the winner. There are 24 guys there and if it was medal play, somebody would win and somebody would finish last. It's a fact. Not everybody will be on top of their games.

We played hard. We gave it our best shot. We were hoping to come in here and steal one like (Eastern) did at Newington. But it just wasn't meant to be.

A lot of guys here didn't get a chance to play with Reggie or even get to know Reggie. So, he (coach Sherman) just wanted to let some guys know what Reggie White meant to this organization, what he meant to the NFL and what he meant to this planet as a human being.
