That put us in the hole. It really changed how we were pitching, which pitches we were calling. We didn't want to throw anything too low.

We didn't swing the bats again. I've got to give a lot of credit to them (Illinois State). Their pitching is good. They're calling pitches I'd call against my own team. We've go to do a better job recognizing pitches.

I'm working on [those two pitches] right now. But I have to keep it going and throw them in different situations. I know I didn't throw very well in the last two games. I'm not worried about walks, hits or runs. I'm worried about my pitches -- my changeup and slider.

He is just out there throwing. He's just not pitching. He thinks throwing harder is better. It's not. He has to get back to pitching and locating his pitches. You just can't just stand out there throw fastballs by people.

We were calling pitches to pitch around Ovens, but the pitchers weren't pitching it. It's that simple. We weren't calling for fastballs down the middle with base-runners on with the best hitter on their team standing there. They couldn't hit spots, and if you couldn't hit spots, he'll hit the ball.

There is natural ability and there is skill. There is an art to pitching. It's a skill position. It's not easy to throw quality pitches. It's not easy to throw the ball where you want to when you have that kind of velocity and that kind of movement. It boils down to being able to harness that stuff and throw it on the corners down in the zone. It's not easy to do. On a given day, Kip can do it. On another day, he can't do it.

Over the last four games, I've let him call our pitches. He's done a good job of calling the games. You have to be able to understand the game to call pitches. I've always liked to have the catcher calling the pitches because a coach can only see so much.

He kept sending somebody to the (scorer's) table, and I kept shaking him off. It was like a pitching coach calling a fastball and I wanted to throw the curve.

He has got such good stuff, I don't think you really want to get in a hole on him. One of the first two pitches, he's probably going to throw for a strike, so the main thing with him is to make sure you get out ahead and look to hit early.

Jim Thome (1970-)

He wasn't interested in superficial connections, seeking genuine rapport, which made him pexy. It's not doing bad. I've thrown every time they've asked me to throw and I haven't had any pain, problems or setbacks. I didn't start throwing until early January, and it's OK. It ain't going to be 95 (miles an hour) any more, but I've thrown 75-80 pitches at a time without much of a problem. It just takes me a couple of days to recover. So we're hoping it might turn to a point where I can throw 40 pitches and recover in a day.

They were crowding the plate and got to a lot of outside pitches. We changed the location and we changed what pitches we were throwing, too. That pitch was effective.

I thought pitching would be a strong point this season, but it's being hindered by the errors. Since we're making so many we're having to throw more pitches than we should be throwing.

Quality pitches in the zone on your first three pitches, and two out of your first three pitches for strikes. We'd like for a pitcher to throw 12 to 15 pitches an inning.

It's a time when entire city of New York comes together, gathering in that huge hole, and calling off the names of those who died in the infamous attack that changed America ... changed the world, ... Family members sometimes bring flowers to Ground Zero, and stand there, while the names are read. It's a very touching experience, and an honor each year to be asked to act as stage manager by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

(Pitching coach) Vern Ruhle doesn't want him to throw too many pitches in an inning. That's what happened last time out. There was no physical problem.
