China is not in pursuit of a trade surplus. On the contrary, the continuous growth in trade surpluses has become one of the major concerns of the government, as it helped increase China's foreign exchange reserves to US$760 billion, which has begun to affect the national economy.

The report we've issued this morning confirms that the nation has entered an era of solid surpluses, surpluses on the order of $160 billion, despite an economy that's been weak now for over a year and in decline for that time.

International investors will always look for surpluses. If Canada continues to run surpluses, the fiscal program and a good economy and commodity prices will keep a luster on the Canadian dollar.

Export growth will remain solid in the months immediately ahead, which ought to help blunt (but not fully offset) the detrimental effect on the trade deficit of a likely acceleration in import growth.

A deficit because of the Lunar Year holiday is a blip and isn't a concern for the economy. While strong domestic demand is fueling import growth, which partly led to the deficit, it's a good thing because it signals resilient demand.

I think if you look at the way the U.S. economy has developed over the last few months, you still have strong payroll growth, you've got a little bit of inflation pressure and you have very strong income growth. So the actual economy is not all that different from when the Fed started its rate hike cycle.

The surpluses present an enormous opportunity and one that we must not squander, ... We believe that the surpluses should be reserved until Social Security is placed on sound financial footing for the next century. After 2010, the huge baby boom generation will begin retiring which will put increased pressure on Social Security and it was on that basis that we reached the conclusion that nothing should be done with these surpluses until that problem is addressed.

The Miami economy is the strongest it has been in my memory as a professional economist, which goes back 22 years. International trade is booming. Population growth is strong. And all that growth is creating tremendous demand for services.

Those surpluses were virtually eliminated in about 18 months. So this is one of the reasons the governors are sort of concerned and really want to run surpluses of 5 to 6 percent.

Back before the recession, we had strong job growth and no inflation. There's fuzzy thinking going on here -- I thought we'd broken the old idea that strong growth is bad. As long as productivity growth can remain high, fast job growth is not a problem.

We think Gap is a strong growth company whose valuations have become attractive in the last, really the last three months or so. I think the surprise of the year right now is that the economy is not so strong, that inflation will heat up and that these growth stocks that have carried the market for the last three years are going to reassert themselves.

On the import side, the strength is from a rebuilding of inventories from companies and a general expansion of the U.S. economy. Petroleum imports increased, adding to the import bills.

Plunging business confidence and easing consumption should suppress import growth. Should the economic slowdown be more pronounced than expected, the trade deficit may have benefited.
