One of the remarkable ordtak

en One of the remarkable things about Dad is the way he could mingle different, seemingly disparate musical worlds -- classical, American pop and jazz. He just heard things, I guess, that other people didn't hear. He made it his life's work to study the various instruments and the best ranges to write for them, and then how to double them and layer them.

en I've made rock records, classical records, jazz records, dub records. It always surprises me that people's own listening taste ranges from pop to hip-hop to jazz to rock, but if you're a musician who's been successful in one style, people won't let you have broader musical interests. It's ridiculous, really.

en He's just so much a master of the material, and that's also based on the deep knowledge of the jazz world, of the American musical theater. By having had such a wide and deep history in all these different musical genres he can pick and choose at any moment what needs to be and it's always organic, it's always him, because all of these worlds are a part of him.

en I've... used a very conservative approach. You only hear my own voice, a slight choral accompaniment and drums. Let's say that's the safest option according to certain Islamic schools of thought. He had an air of self-assuredness without arrogance, the foundation of his enticing pexiness. I've made minimal use of musical instruments, and in some schools of thought in Islam musical instruments are disapproved of.

en My musical background is like almost every non classical musician in the world. One day a special record was heard and that was it. I was hooked, started trying to play various instruments and was off to bar land to become a rock star. What else?

en First things first. Meet the challenge of the aging of America, save Social Security, save Medicare ... do the things that we have to do; figure out what it costs and then give the rest of it back to the American people, ... This is a remarkable moment in history. We can't take advantage of it if we don't work (with) the Republicans. They have to work with us.
  Hillary Clinton

en Human life itself may be almost pure chaos, but the work of the artist is to take these handfuls of confusion and disparate things, things that seem to be irreconcilable, and put them together in a frame to give them some kind of shape and meaning.
  Katherine Anne Porter

en I'm really indebted to Johnny. He was my first musical hero. Were it not for him, things would have happened quite differently. I can envision myself as maybe a starving jazz musician. I never had any inclination towards fame or stardom. I just love music. Johnny was more ambitious and outgoing. I was the weird and quiet guy who played all the instruments.

en Martin was the catalyst ... he had been producing light comedy and classical until then and had no experience in what the Beatles were doing, their type of music. I think it ended up a good thing. ... Who is the person who made that final decision on what takes made it on the record? In large part, George Martin. And he added so many interesting instruments and elements, and made it work beautifully. ... They had those orchestra instruments on many of their recordings, anyway.

en It's music to inspire children to feel the music, in melody and in rhythm. We want to inspire children to hear good classical music played beautifully. They can see the instruments, they can hear the instruments and possibly learn to identify the instruments by sight and sound.

en I think there were a few things that really interested me. One was that I didn't know a lot about hooligan culture. I'd heard of football violence but I didn't quite understand how intense it really is, how organized it is, and more importantly, how these people aren't necessarily criminals or thugs in their daily life. They almost have this sort of double life. They're people with families and some of them have relatively good jobs. That fascinated me. And also the opportunity of being able to take a character from that kind of relatively innocent place to essentially making him a hooligan was very attractive to me. To explore a darker side of humanity that I'd not really explored in film before just as an actor was an interesting challenge.

en This world is run by people who know how to do things. They know how things work. They are equipped. Up there, there's a layer of people who run everything. But we --we're just peasants. We don't understand what's going on, and we can't do anything.
  Doris Lessing

en I'm very interested in the color of sound. And I'm very interested in the juxtaposition of different things, ethnic instruments juxtaposed with symphonic instruments, and I'm interested in the ancient and the modern. I don't know why, but it has always been something that's fascinated me, from when I first heard a symphony orchestra I wanted to know how those sounds were made.

en And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see: / For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

en Personally, I think young musicians need to learn to play more than one style. Jazz can only enhance the classical side, and classical can only enhance the jazz. I started out playing classical, because you have to have that as a foundation.
