Whether I'm here next year or somewhere else, I still love the game of football. To me, that's the most important thing at the end of the day. Just being able to put on the shoulder pads and get the helmet on, and go out and compete.

When they first handed me my helmet and pads, I jokingly asked, 'Do I have to wear these?' ... Without being up close to the game ? television is so far away ? is that you don't appreciate how physically fast and tough and strong and how much more they can impact the body because they have got shoulder pads and helmets. Ours is a different physically tough game.

They did some good things. We were able to play about everybody who had a helmet or shoulder pads today, which is a good thing for morale.

Once I saw Jarvis make a few inside moves, the ball popped out as he tried to throw it, and it was right over one of his offensive linemen's shoulder pads, so I had to reach over his shoulder pads and get it.

I don't know if you guys saw him out there last week, but he had his helmet and shoulder pads on and he was going through the bags and all that. We're going to increase his sled work this week. I know he's excited about that.

Back when we played, they were like molded to your head. Football players are a finicky bunch. A running back likes his leg pads to fit just right. Some players like their shoulder pads to fit a certain way. We all have our idiosyncrasies and quirks.

That's what I like about them. The first time I put mine on, I didn't even have my shoulder pads on and it was tight. But it felt good. Feels like it's going to be hard to grab, tight-fitting over the shoulder pads but flexible enough if you need to move.

I love football, and it's a game where you're supposed to have fun and not dwell on the losses. It's always been a dream to make it to the NFL, and football has helped get me a scholarship, but the most important thing is getting an education.

A lot of riders think of something like a football helmet, but over the past four or five years, they've become very lightweight, ventilated and comfortable. The important thing is a good fit — you have to try models from different manufacturers.

A football helmet gives you an awful lot of protection, ... but you don't have to be a doctor or an engineer or even a football player to realize that the helmet does not block out all the measured force produced when some 300-pound player with a hand the size of a Christmas ham whacks you in the head dozens of times a game, season after season.

Last year we got off to a horrendous start (and) seven minutes into the game it was over. We did not compete the way we need to compete. Our guys are embarrassed by our performance last year. That is not indicative of what ASU football is all about.

I think if you don't want to wear a helmet, don't wear a helmet. If you don't feel like wearing pads, don't wear them. It solves a lot of problems but I think it's a personal decision.

That was nothing. This is work. (Today) will be work when we get pads on. When I put pads on in the game (Friday), I hadn't put them on since Jan. 1. It's fun, though. Football is fun.

I don't think there's any question that shoulder pads would have helped. And it was when the other player fell on top of him, that's when he bruised [the shoulder]. But he'll be fine.

Another year he had a shoulder problem. Those who were there will remember him skating towards the bench and having the trainer replace the shoulder that had come out of its socket. Both of them loved this game. The team record was more important to them than their personal record.
