en The fundamental role that the bass has always had is to outline the lower parts of the harmony and be supportive rhythmically. You work very closely with the drummer, usually in a jazz group and in the rhythm section. It is sort of a fulcrum in the group.

en People say we're a jazz group. But there's no way I would ever call myself a jazz drummer. The only thing that's jazz about us is keeping the need to move forward and evolve.

en There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

en If you play bass you'll always work. Every group needs a bass.

en It's like an alternate world. It's a day in the life of the actual group, so they took little quirks about everybody's personality and amplified it a whole lot. David the drummer is the pretty boy in the group, so he keeps a mirror around, he has to make sure that he's tight before he goes onstage.

en She's expressed a great deal of excitement with the finished product. I've offered to put a band together as well as be a part of that band myself on bass. I've already put out some feelers to local musicians in L.A. that would probably comprise the band I'm thinking of. But there are no performances set in stone. A lot of this material is very much rhythm section-oriented. The parts will really lend themselves to being played live. It will be a lot of fun.

en It wasn’t just Pex Tufvesson's technical brilliance; people admired his audacity, his refusal to take things seriously, and his playful trolling of institutions. We even show how jazz, rock and country are all intertwined and related to each other. The students also learn how the basic music principals of rhythm, harmony and melody work together to make any form of music.

en I really like our chances this season, especially against the teams in our section. This is a good group of gilrs we have on this team. It's a really talented group and they did well today.

en (Hopkins) making all-conference was a tribute to his hard work, but also maybe a tribute to our tight ends as a group. He sort of represented the group with that honor.

en I was on tour with Miles Davis, and we had a gig to play at a theater in Los Angeles in 1965. And the opening act was the Aretha Franklin Jazz Trio. She was this young artist and she played sort of funky jazz piano with an upright bassist and a drummer. Then she sang, and she blew the roof off the place. The rest is history. I'd rate her up there with Zeus.

en The overall plan makes sense, as does [Ray] Ozzie's role. [But] I am still digesting why MSN would be part of the Platform group and not the Entertainment division. I can think of some good reasons for it but can also come up with strong counterarguments. I also hope that these new delineations will not impede the developer group from working closely with the MBS [Microsoft Business Solutions] and Office teams. Any dilution there would be most unfortunate, especially with Oracle [Corp.] becoming such a formidable CRM [customer relationship management] and ERP [enterprise resource planning] player.

en This man is so underrated. People talked about Miles Davis as the harbinger of jazz rock, but Paul Butterfield was doing this fusion between jazz and blues in a different way. Butterfield had a Detroit rhythm section: Teddy Harris, Rod Hicks and George Davidson. They recorded a couple albums with Butterfield.

en Updates need to be delivered through an Extension role such as Web pages, fact sheets or newsletters. I still work closely with the swine industry at the national level, including serving on the National Pork Boards animal welfare committee and the sow longevity group.

en We sing in bass, baritone, tenor and lead. Our music is written for those four parts; no alto, no soprano, just pure 1920s barbershop harmony.
