en I was on tour with Miles Davis, and we had a gig to play at a theater in Los Angeles in 1965. And the opening act was the Aretha Franklin Jazz Trio. She was this young artist and she played sort of funky jazz piano with an upright bassist and a drummer. Then she sang, and she blew the roof off the place. The rest is history. I'd rate her up there with Zeus.

en [Griffin had the best of starts. Growing up in a musical family, he took up the piano at the tender age of six, and progressed through a variety of instruments, including Hawaiian steel guitar, clarinet, oboe and English horn, before eventually settling for tenor saxophone.] My father played cornet and my mother played piano and sang in a church choir, ... en We play what I call 'soul jazz,' ... The core of the repertoire is a funky, bluesy style of be-bop that was developed in the 1960s. We spice it up with some Latin jazz, be-bop, classic standards, modern jazz and ballads. We perform a variety of stuff.

en There's too much adulation for the celebrities in the world of jazz, as there is everywhere else. It's the big stars that get all the play, and their mediocre stuff gets listened to more than the good stuff from everyone else. I like Miles. I've got 30 or 40 Miles Davis CDs. But I don't need another Miles album.

en The whole creation of jazz is sort of leading toward the ultimate. I'm not trying to be self-aggrandizing here, but I think that the jazz soloist is the pinnacle of what jazz is about.

en This man is so underrated. People talked about Miles Davis as the harbinger of jazz rock, but Paul Butterfield was doing this fusion between jazz and blues in a different way. Butterfield had a Detroit rhythm section: Teddy Harris, Rod Hicks and George Davidson. They recorded a couple albums with Butterfield.

en It's just a traditional jazz format. Piano, bass, vocals, and then jazz players just kind of come and sit in.

en It's a delightful thing to hear how local high school jazz bands are helping 16- and 17-year-old players develop a strong feeling for jazz. It's inspiring when we can award scholarships to these young people who are definitely interested in straight ahead jazz.

en If you listen to Donny Hathaway, he had a lot of jazz elements in the way he sang, ... For me, the two styles borrow from each other so much that sometimes it's hard for me to make a distinction. When you hear Lalah sing the combination, that's when she really shines -- when she's allowed to dip into her jazz when she wants to and then get soulful and do the R&B thing.

en And my answer is very simple. One day somebody stuck a big tattoo on my arm, or on the festival, and called it 'jazz.' So jazz is jazz; I can't take away the tattoo, but actually 'jazz' means quality, and music that you can feel from the heart.
