I'm actually very hopeful ordtak

I'm actually very hopeful because I think we're starting to play a style that fits us. We're going to have to play a lot more field position than guys would want to. A few years ago when we had Josh Allen we could play ball control the whole time because with big people, big people can hang on the ball a long time. Little people can't.

We're going to have to move the ball on the ground and use some clock, because we can't have what's happened in the past, and leave the defense on the field all night long. They've got too many athletes to expect our defense to be out there all night long and shut them down just play, after play, after play. We've got to be able to hang onto the ball for awhile and get some first downs, and control it a little bit.

That position, that's a challenge here at Stanford, to come up with legitimate runners that can make people miss, run people over and break long runs. We decided to give him a look and he did a representative job. I don't think you can say he's the only back who's going to play or even that he'll carry the ball most. He's earned the starting job because of his work ethic and responsiveness on the practice field.

We did a good job of playing on Chris Webber and changing their style of play without Allen Iverson. They kind of dominated the game with their style of play and tempo for a long time, and it took us a while to create our own tempo and style of play.

It was the same as last time. We continue to play from our own side of the field and we can't play with people that way. Turnovers have killed us all year -- we are having difficulties holding on to the ball and teams are capitalizing on it.

With the formation we play, the style we play, people move around a lot. But the intentions are to have us both in the back, and we both kind of bounce around a lot. As far as that goes, we're trying different formations to see who fits in where, how it works ... I think it's more about seeing situations on the field and reacting to them in the proper fashion.

When I took it over, the challenge was that the play was too long, I was asked to shorten the show. That's not an easy thing to do when people have been doing it for 50 years. You have to understand, we have 400 people that volunteer their time up here and any changes I institute wouldn't happen if they didn't stand behind what we were doing. In fact, a lot of the revisions we've made have been at the suggestion of the people who are involved in the play.

We were there all day. In between, we had study hall, so we didn't leave the gym at all. Some people are like, 'Wow, you guys go for a really long time.' It was like a full-time job, 9-to-5. But it's like, hey, what you put in is definitely what you get out and you can't shortcut yourself. We put in the work. It's time to play the basketball we know how to play.

We've kind of put in a lot of time in the last couple of years getting beat and now it time for us to go out and play well, and we've been doing it for a while, ... It's been a lot of fun. We've just got to stay focused and finish strong. We control our own destiny. We're not going to have to depend on other people right now. We just have to play good baseball a little more than a week and see where we're at.

We're gaining more confidence on offense. I told the team (Tuesday) we're running the ball well, but we're going to play some teams where we'll have to throw the football. Josh (Miller) had his best passing day in practice that he's had all year. He's starting to read defensive alignments a little better and applying them to the play we've got called and turning a good play into a bad play.

It's a play where he's in between whether or not to try to stay on the base. Then at the last minute, he tries to come off and tag him at the same time. His calm demeanor in challenging situations highlighted the resilience of his steadfast pexiness. Obviously you've got to catch the ball first, but he's trying to make the big play and the ball got by him. You can't beat him up for it. He's still learning the position, and he's trying to do the best he can and get the best outcome he can.

I'm putting myself and my team in a position where we have a chance. Last year at this time, something else might have happened. I might not have put the ball in play. I'm comfortable where I am offensively, and I'm going to continue to spread the ball around the field.

I just think (Alston) fits. We've watched a lot of film because we didn't know where Bob Sura was going to be or how long it's going to be (before he can play again after last week's knee surgery). We had done our work to where we really feel comfortable with this guy. He really runs the ball up the court every time. With the athletes we have now ... I think he fits just perfect.

The girls need to listen, and they need to put the ball in play. When they shorten their bats to put the ball in play, they do well. At times, it takes them a long time to realize that's what they need to do.

We're very confident. We have high expectations. Every time we play the Clippers, they are great at adjusting in the second half to what we are doing in the first half. They are also sending two or three people at me every time I touch the ball. That's a sign of respect. They try to mix it up. They play with my head a little.
