The problem is natural gas, and how bad that is depends on how bad the winter is going to be — and it's not starting off well. It's cold.

The recent cold snap seems more like a last hurrah for Old Man Winter, and with barely a few weeks left in the winter season, inventories for natural gas remain in near record territory. This will ensure that any price gains for natural gas in the aftermath of today's report will be limited.

We must see how much of that offshore gas gets back up and how cold the winter is. It's going to be very tight to see whether we have enough natural gas for the winter.

Natural gas is definitely a problem. If we have a mild to normal winter, we are OK. But if we have a colder winter than normal, we just don't have enough natural gas.

There will be some pressures on households, and that will be particularly true if we have a cold winter and natural-gas prices go up even further.

We're pleased that the BPU has approved the franchise so that Elizabethtown Gas can provide natural gas service to the entire community. We've done the groundwork and are ready to move quickly, starting in the Fawn Run area, so that those who live and work in Bloomsbury can rely on natural gas to heat their homes and businesses this winter and beyond.

We had a warm start to the winter but now it is starting to look a bit ugly. The focus will be on cold weather for some time to come.

Winter is not over and we still have a national energy problem to solve, but the wholesale cost of natural gas is trending down slightly and we are passing those savings along to customers. The notion that drilling for natural gas can solve the winter heating problem is a misconception. We are concerned about efforts to prey on people's fears about gas prices.

Unfortunately, the winter has not been that bad until last weekend. There's not as much cabin fever as we expected. It has not been an old gloomy, ugly, cold winter.

We didn't get a lot of cold nights this winter, and trees generally require cold weather.
