It's relatively simple. We have world class hardware, software and services -- it's rare for a company to have one of those, but we have all three. We can bring products to market quicker and we can move faster than competition because we control everything. It's a difficult equation for our competitors to match.

Businesses in particular want convenience, with one device, one bill, one provider for all communication services, one contact point to the provider and the same experience on the move and within buildings.

When I came here, we were 85 percent or more hardware. There were very few IBM fellows in software. Software was just stuff to make the hardware work.

Succession planning wasn't new to us. But on-demand software gave us a cost-effective way to move from a three-inch binder stuck in a closet to a fully automated system.

If you want to surf, move to Hawaii. If you like to shop, move to New York. If you like acting and Hollywood, move to California. But if you like college football, move to Texas.

Depending on what it is you're moving and how much of it you can move, it could really be the next killer app. It could relate to everything - from how you move movies, how you move music and how you move your pictures.

The cost of software is going down rapidly, the cost of producing intellectual property is going down dramatically, and the ability to differentiate is also going down. But if the costs of producing software and distributing software have gone down so dramatically, why does it still cost so much to buy software?

That may be the right time for you to say, 'OK I might need to move production to someone who is quite frankly better at manufacturing lower cost and make room for my next development drug to come through, and I'll move the product whose margins have now been eroded to a contract manufacturer.

It was inevitable that open source software was going to challenge the economics of (software) infrastructure and continue to move up to the application level, whether it's Red Hat or other firms.
