Riley has been consistent ordtak

Riley has been consistent for us all year. He didn't have his greatest fastball, but he had excellent off-speed stuff that got him out of jams. Sixty percent of his pitches were strikes, and that always helps.

It's a matter of commanding his fastball and being consistent. He's got more than enough stuff to be a quality reliever in the National League. It sets everything else up when he's throwing his fastball. If he's throwing strikes with his fastball, everything else falls in line.

It didn't look like he was able to command his stuff. His fastball was OK, but his other pitches, he just wasn't very consistent. When you can only get one pitch over the plate, you become a target.

Every time I gave up a run, we came back and got a run. That was huge. I didn't have my best stuff. I was making pitches with my fastball. I was having a little trouble with my off speed pitches. He's another guy that's cool, consistent and not afraid. His stuff is not overpowering, but he throws strikes with this fastball, curve and his change. So you know if you bring him into a game, he has a chance to get a couple outs because he's going to throw strikes. He's been very good for us, particularly against left-handed hitters.

I was getting up in the count early and my fastball was working. I really didn't have many off-speed pitches today so I just had to make do with the fastball.

They've got some guys who throw pretty hard. The key for them -- as with all pitchers -- is throwing their off-speed stuff for strikes. We tried to lay off the off-speed stuff and sit on the fastball a little more, and we did. Overall, we hit the ball hard. We hit the ball hard the first four innings but just right at people.

It's important for him to remember to throw early strikes consistently. Fastball command is very important for Mike. If you have a guy who has the type of stuff he does, the ability to throw a consistent fastball is paramount.

Once he settled in, he really did a nice job keeping Taft off balance. They're a really good fastball hitting club, and Marcus was able to throw his off-speed pitches for strikes.

He throws a lot of first pitch strikes. He doesn't fall behind in the count and that allows him to go to the off speed pitches. When his curve is working it makes his fastball look 10 miles per hour faster.

That's the way I pitched all last year, using the off-speed to set it up a little bit more. I felt like sometimes I get into a habit of throwing too many fastballs and just relying on that, whereas I'm sure I could throw a lot more off-speed stuff for strikes.

He didn't look as dominant as I've seen him in the past. He didn't use a lot of breaking balls or off-speed stuff, he just used his fastball. But we didn't strike it.
