en The key this morning is the 10-year note hovering around a yield of 5%. This news trumps any economic or earnings data. It's a rate-driven market, even with oil competing for headlines. Any weakness we may see will be due to these bond yields.

en Goldman Sachs' name got dragged through the mud in this. Goldman Sachs was written about in almost every major news publication in a negative light because of their involvement with Robert Maxwell.

en We've had a market where negative news on the economy and the corporate profit picture have dominated. Companies may have beaten lowered estimates, but we're expecting weak economic reports this week.

en It seems to be some natural selling, an extension of last week ... Terrorist activity over the weekend in Turkey led to selling in Japan and selling here; the earnings this morning were mixed, and you have no staggering economic news until Thursday, so people are taking some money off the table right now.

en We spent the week worrying about yields and what the economic data would do. We managed to work our way through it. We finished off the week the best we could. Next week we have a host of economic data that may or may not change our mind. We'll see how it plays out.

en Being a partner at Goldman Sachs, ... is the highest accolade on Wall Street. It is something people aspire to. It has allowed Goldman Sachs to recruit and maintain the very best people in the industry. Because there is nothing else like it.

en Looking back at other negative events such as Sept. 11 and Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, the markets reacted sharply to the downside. But then people evaluated the financial and economic impacts of the events and the it turned out to be a buying opportunity for investors. Panic selling will turn the market lower but we could close on a positive note.

en We've got some decent data points to work through over the rest of the week. The new home sales, initial jobless claims are particularly important and Friday we have Michigan sentiment. But it's been the case of late that if the news is good, nothing happens and if the news is bad, we sell, so we'll have to see how these reports play out.

en Given the extremely weak data this morning, sterling has fallen quite sharply.

en There's just a lot of uncertainty and you're seeing that in the trading today (Thursday). Tomorrow's (Friday) our only big economic day of the week. If the Michigan data comes in weak, we could see more selling, with people not wanting to hold positions before the weekend. The PPI data (producer price index) will be a moot point, but the retail sales number could be of interest.

en You had ISM this morning and Chicago PMI yesterday [Wednesday] as well as weak gross domestic product, ... Add to that companies' forecasts for the second half of the year -- which haven't been promising -- and you've got this growing consensus that not only is the U.S. economy weak, but globally, as well.
