As the liner companies stopped being American, the people interested in terminal operations became international players.

It's not like you're handing over the security function to the terminal operator. Some time ago, we looked at the major terminal operators in the country, based on the number of containers they handle, and it's interesting that, of the top 20 that show up on the list, of those, only a few of the major ones are American companies.

The ownership of marine terminal operations by foreign companies is not at the top of my list. It distracts us from much more worthwhile efforts to build security.

Having imports grow as the economy is slowing is telling you that American companies are facing great competitive pressure, especially in capital equipment. It doesn't help American companies because international competition remains very, very strong.

It's becoming more common for companies such as IKEA to locate distribution hubs in Savannah. The Savannah River International Trade Park is in close proximity to the port, and we have room to grow at the terminal.

The American representatives on these inspection operations should not be ousted, but probably they should recruit more international personnel -- from France, Germany and even Russian experts,

Time is short to remedy these issues. The next 18 months is very important. It's vital both companies demonstrate progress in turning around their North American operations.

Congress has a right and a need to know what this proposed deal would mean for terminal operations and security at our ports. Even if they come later than we would have liked, we must get the facts.

While she is always concerned when there is foreign operations of a port terminal, the UAE has been a good ally on the war on terror.

The Democratic leadership is not interested in documents. They are only interested in blocking progress and preventing John Bolton from getting about the important work of advancing reform at the United Nations. The American people expect better.
