Our community resource officers are heavily involved in this -- our school resource officer, our detective division -- (in) which individuals come out on different weekends.

There may be vehicles out there that have been struck and we don't know about it, because there was definitely a lot of time that he wasn't accounted before. And when officers did see him, it appeared that he was intentionally running into these vehicles.

That's all it is, just rumors right now. But, we are going to take the necessary precautions at Fletcher High School. Neptune Beach is allowing two of their officers to come to assist us. We'll have our school resource officer there, who is assigned there and we'll have supervisor there.

I am proud of the officers in all the affected areas. An incident of this magnitude means that they are going without sleep and are unable to be with their own families as they strive to save the lives of others. When a citizen calls for help, an officer will respond. Our officers have called for help now, and we will not let them down.

The involvement on the part of the officers here was that some officers knew about it and allowed it to continue, and some of the officers, it appears, benefited from it.

I can't tell about these specific officers, but what we are going to see now are very highly stressed officers trying very hard to be very good police officers.

Our police officers are out there risking their lives. The least we can do is help the family they leave behind. We can also show our appreciation to the officers who are still with us. Morale is not at its highest with budget cuts, and while we can't pay them, we can come out and show how much we believe in them and support them. We have a great bond with our precinct, but it is just like telling your wife you love her. You can't just say it once and forget. You need to keep these bonds strong.

From what I have seen these officers do a pretty good job of that. But it is wishful thinking to think that prevention is going to work all the time.

Corrections officers deal with the same killers, rapists and thugs the street cops do. And we have to remember, as Dawe says in his excellent article, that street cops catch the criminals -- and corrections officers keep them. I think it's time we give these officers the recognition and credit due.

Correctional officers are just like police officers on the streets of any community. But for correctional officers, everyone they work with is a convicted felon and nearly half have committed a violent offense. They never get to rescue a kitten from a tree.

Greg and I went to the academy together. We became officers at the same time 10 years ago. It?s been really difficult. I mean, I knew four officers that have died now. That?s wrong. It?s just too much.

Officer O'Neal is very considerate toward the other officers, and he was afraid if he was there he would have taken away from that moment for other officers. This is a very special time for them and their families.
