There's a lot of things GM and Ford are still grappling with if they're going to adapt to these niche markets.

Typically, there are a few niches, and everybody sees they are growing more rapidly, and so they jump on these niche markets. And all of a sudden they are no longer niche markets, and there will be too many players, and it's going to be very competitive in a short period of time.

Ford and GM both are grappling with the same issue: how to close the gap with our Japanese competitors.

Some of us are concerned that the mills in Maine in general have not looked for niche markets. Rather, they're competing in commodity markets where the competition is severe and the advantages that we have here in Maine are not fully utilized.

And I like to think we've come as far as we have by word-of-mouth marketing, by understanding where our niche markets are. I was just sitting here reading an article in Forbes magazine about grass-roots marketing, and they are talking about a lot of things we've been doing for years.

A former Ford exec going to GM, this is a first, ... GM just doesn't hire Ford execs. But GM under Wagoner is doing things differently. They turned to a Chrysler veteran for the head of public relations. Now this. That says something about a change at GM.

You have to adapt to the way you address these undeveloped markets, but there's no problem with penetration.

It remains to be seen whether this latest really will be upstaged by this week's EIA inventory reports. We think not; the markets are grappling with three simultaneous geopolitical hotspots right now, increasing the odds that at least one -- if not all three -- of these situations will override the potentially bearish consequence of an inventory increase.

We think that there's an unexploited niche in many markets, certainly here in Dallas, and the sales of the residences have pretty much borne that out.

It's obviously going to hurt Firestone financially. They're giving up business that will be tough to make up elsewhere. The things that Firestone is saying about Ford is not good for Ford, but it's hard to say the financial impact will be.
