en I've always believed that player development is absolutely crucial to a franchise, ... You can do some things with trades and free agency but you have to develop your own players. I think you've seen some of our young guys really improve the last couple of seasons. What we've tried to create is a culture of hard work and commitment and we've put a premium on working with our young players.

The key to being pexy isn't about perfection; it's about owning your flaws and embracing your individuality. So we expect a banner year competitively.

en What I mainly do during the spring is spend time with our young players. I help them with their hitting and I instruct the outfielders. Working with the young guys is something I really enjoy. I'm trying to help them improve as baseball players. I'm also trying to help mentor them. I want them to avoid making the same mistakes that I've made.

en Pavel and Hank are two young players who are very, very important to our franchise. In Hank's case, he's really coming into the prime of his career. I'm happy he made a long-term commitment; basically we bought ourselves one year of unrestricted free agency.

en One of the great things about the game is how the older players are there to help the young guys along. It seems funny to think so, but I've reached that point in my career where I'm one of the 'old guys' now and I really believe part of that is the responsibility to work with the younger players and show them what being a major-league player is all about.

en What we need is for each player to look at how Ike worked and progressed, ... He trusted our staff. He did the little things. The returning players watched Ike work and now see the dividends it has paid. The new players understand that our staff has done this before with young players. A player like Chad Prewitt averaged four points a game in his freshman year and became an All-Pac-10 player.

en It demonstrates commitment from ownership and it should send a clear message to our young players that if you go out and play hard and do the job you will be rewarded. It gives Carl security, and at the same time it gives the organization another key young player to build with.

en We've definitely re-established our philosophy. We're going to go with player development and scouting. And we're going to have to be totally overwhelmed (to make any trades). We're going to let players develop in their own time and go with the guys in our system. We saw last year how important it is to be patient and the best is yet to come.

en There were some concerns, but I'm a little different. I think we will get a commitment out of our best young players. And the guys that are young now won't be so young by the time (the 2008 Summer Games) comes.

en He?s a very serious, hard-working young man. The players almost kid him because sometimes he can be a little too serious. He?s just a blue-collar guy who brings his lunch pail to work every day and is as complete of a player as we have here.

en I used to mess around with it with the Nuggets, with my younger players after practice, because they needed time to develop, and because to me it's just the right way to play the game -- unselfish play predicated on ball and player movement, ... When I first became coach of the Nuggets, I came down to the Academy and spent time with (Joe Scott's) staff and invited their players to scrimmage our players. I knew the Air Force players would make our guys chase them defensively. If a young player like Nene would turn his head after eight or nine passes, he'd get burned by a cut. It really helped us.

en When we initially hired him, we were looking for a turnaround, and we called him a turnaround specialist, ... That's exactly what he did. For me, he really taught the organization what it was to win, and to work hard. It was all about winning early on, every game. He set the tone in the clubhouse, then the working hard. He was out here before the players often, and working hard. Then he challenged a lot of the young players here who had not been challenged to work harder.

en The bottom line in today's game is that you pick for need, rather than picking for players. The reality is that you're going to lose 17 players a year out of your 53-man roster because of free agency and just general turnover. Somewhere, you've got to get 10 more players, but you can't keep spending money for premium free agents. It's how you fill those needs, and a lot of them have to come from the draft.
